  1. One of the unintended consequences of forcing aesthetics on people is that what looks good now, may not look good in ten, twenty, or fifty years. Aesthetics is a realm of subjectivity.

True perhaps, however, you can rest assured that what doesn't look good today certainly won't look good twenty years from now.

  2. The Faison website has updated info on The Avenue as well. Haverty's, Old Navy, and a couple others which I can't make out. That means the current Old Navy/Linens n Things/Lane Bryant center on Old Fort is probably taking a huge hit from this. Hate to see that sitting empty. It also shows the Phase Two of the project which seems to be unconnected and on the parcel of land closer to Thompson Lane.

  3. The description of the mall's expansion on General Growth's website no longer mentions "a larger format bookstore" as it did until recently. Also I think Justiceham may have mentioned something on this before, but the word from a reliable source is there's to be an Olive Garden and Friday's out in front of the mall.

  4. Both stores look great and will be a positive change for the community. I particularly like the signage and brightness of the stores. However, I didn't think they could pull it off at the Memorial store because it is a smaller space than what Publix usually operates.

I had heard they were going to tear Memorial down and rebuild, but something about the other tenants leases kept that from happening.

  5. I agree with the above. I drive home around the square after work at about 10 PM many nights and it looks more happening than ever to me.

My interest is retail, so I have noticed there are retail stores and eateries popping up. Binks does well. The toy store. The Maple Street Grill just to name a few. The square could actually come to benefit from all the other shopping coming to town. An easy side trip for unique shops the way Franklin's square is.

And a side note or all of you who wanted Murfreesboro to have its own forum. It's dull. So props to Justiceham fro trying to keep it going, but it was much more interesting when lots more opinions were voiced be them good or bad.

  6. That was actually a Albertson's grocery store, the original Wal-Mart was attached to the Stones River Mall, the old Dilliard's to be exact. Bojangles is thriving down here in Jacksonville,FL

The MAC location was indeed Wal-Mart. It was a store called Big K, which Wal-Mart bought in the 80s. Then Food Max tore it down and built a store, which was bought by Albertson's. The mall Wal-Mart was the second Wal-Mart location for Murf.

  7. Well if Gap stays there and Banana Republic comes in to Stones River, they should be fine. They will have the large department stores that the Avenue won't. Also, Gap and Banana will most likely have more draw than any of the apparel retailers at the Avenue.

My understanding is that the Belk at The Avenue is going to be larger and better than their average store.

  8. Thanks for that.....That would've always been blocked and I'd have missed it. I also meant to tell you Relient...that the Dillard's there was built as a Wal-Mart in the late 80s.....since you're not from here i thought you'd find that interesting. Castner-Knott remodeled it and Dillard's bought them 2 years after they opened.

  9. I want both malls to work as much as the next guy, but without an incredibly balanced selection of stores between the two, it may just not. I think we may end up seeing The Avenue thrive on the best of the small shop selection, while Stones River may become a mall with anchors and no good smaller tenants. Don't you think its funny that Stones River has named no tenants? The 2 million square feet on Manchester Highway? There's simply not enough stores to go around, or at least not enough of the type of retail they describe. They had said regional department stores. There are no regional department stores left to go there. If Macy's comes I'm sure it will be in one of the other developments. I would hate to see Stones River go away, but it may have been better for the city if The Avenue would have been an all inclusive with JC Penney and Dillard's there. When Mr Gatton sold the property to Cousins, he had his pick of mall owners, and he chose Cousins. Had he chosen CBL or someone else I think we would have gotten a more inclusive development. One thing I have noticed. Kay jewelers just built a new store in Stones River, and they are on the list for The Avenue. So maybe it can work. I hope so.

  10. Perhaps they are going to close the other location, that could explain why the Post called the Rutherford location the third Murf location instead of the fourth. They obviously do overlap that much in lots of places though.

  11. I would expect a Starbucks at the Avenue as well, but it might be too close to the mall location.

I dont think Starbucks knows what too close means. I would expect the mall location and former dairy queen to coexist....and some of the other Avenues have Starbucks standing alone right beside the ones in the bookstores.

  12. Hate to Knit pick but Murfreesboros population in 1960 was 18,991 Shelbyvilles current estimate is around 19,200(without the illegals factored in). I 24 was built between 1962-68.

    Oops...sorry!

Don't feel bad about knit-picking either....I think most of us on here thrive on it!!

  13. Well it looks, and possibly sounds, eerily like snobbery to me. Facts are facts here, Murfreesboro is what it is because of Nashville and its proximity to a MAJOR metropolitan area. Take away that metro and Murfreesboro is nothing more than Shelbyville. There are a number of factors, but proximity and access play the biggest role in the growth of Rutherford County and Murfreesboro specifically.

Murfreesboro was bigger in the days before I-24 existed than Shelbyville comes close to being now! (No offense Shelbyville)! I don't disagree with you that Murfreesboro relies heavily on Nashville but we are much more self sustaining than any community around Nashville besides Franklin. I've noticed in some of your posts you call Murfreesboro nothing but blue collar and say its trying to be something its not......and then in others you argue the suburbia of it. I think its a healthy combination of both, and I think lots of people like the diversity of it.

  14. All of the Kroger's have been updated in Murfreesboro. I especially like the fact they have a Natural Foods section. Publix seems to be on the natural bandwagon, too. I spoke to a manager at one of the local Kroger stores and the Harris Teeter has been cancelled on Rutherford due to bacteria being found on the land. I believe otherwise $$$$$.

I agree. I just don't understand how they let themselves get that far along and then realize it.

By the way, does anyone know what the land cleared at Northfield and Tennessee is for? There's a Vision sign out front, but I've not read a thing on it.

  15. Interesting... I didn't know that BiLo had any stores in the NSH metro. I think they own the Chattanooga market, and some of the stores are actually decent. But they're not Publix.

Have you guys in Nashville seen any changes in the Kroger stores since Publix moved in a few years ago? Just curious b/c there was a big push to update stores in ATL. It's quite natural not to spend money unless/until you have to.

They've been remodeling the older stores and opening new ones to combat it...Their sixth Murfreesboro location is going in right now.

Also, there were BI-LO stores in Franklin and Lavergne but I think they were both sold to Southern Family Markets a while back.

  16. thank you lord, i love Publix. I am stationed here in Jacksonville,FL and your only grocery options are Publix, Winn-Dixie,Wal-Mart,Super and regular Target, and you neighborhood markets. Can we get rid of Kroger, that yankee company needs to go back north and since TN is in Dixie, bring Winn Dixie up here, they just came outta bankruptcy, so its all good

I like Publix and am glad to see it coming, but Kroger has long-standing hold in Murfreesboro going back to a store in the downtown area years and years ago. I don't think they'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

  17. I think that's correct. My understanding is the section where the old Dillard's is will be replaced with the outdoor lifestyle section. The old JC Penney is to be replaced with a bookstore (which would just about have to be Borders) and a food court. The area of the mall leading to the new Penney's gives a good indication of how the renovated mall interior is going to look. It has carpet, but one of the renderings i saw showed dark wood floors and carpet. I am very curious about the Sears as well. I'm wondering if they may be going to build a bigger store off mall like they have done elsewhere. I'm still thinking that would be a good spot for Macy's to replace its HH store if they should decide to jump that ship.
