  2. Seems that there's a new "vision" for the "The Gulch" in Downtown Atlanta.

An ambitious new vision for an oft-forgotten stretch of downtown would create a linear park ringed by pedestrian-friendly development, stretching from the state Capitol area to Philips Arena.

The conceptual plan, unveiled Wednesday by Central Atlanta Progress, envisions massive commercial development near Philips and CNN Center on the west end of the 94-acre area, an overhaul of the Five Points MARTA station in the middle and new Georgia State student housing on the east, all connected by greenspace and walkways.

    CAP's board Wednesday morning, include:

    * MARTA's headquarters moving next to its hub station at Five Points

    * Removing the above-ground structure of the Five Points station and replacing it with a public plaza

    * Building 5,000 student housing units just north of Underground Atlanta for Georgia State students

    * Developing the multimodal station next to a new MARTA headquarters building as a connecting point for commuter trains, regional and intercity buses

    * Creating a new street grid over the area now known as the railroad gulch that would carve out a dozen development sites for office and retail space near CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park

    * Redeveloping the street-level portion of Underground Atlanta to add larger buildings that would mix office and retail uses.

    * Connecting the entire three-quarters of a mile corridor with 15 acres of green space and public plazas.

CAP has worked with downtown property owners since April to seek consensus for the Green Line.

"Most of the property in this corridor is controlled by public entities," said A.J. Robinson, CAP's president. "If everyone can share the same vision, perhaps collectively we can get something done."

  3. In 25 years, I honestly don't think Atlanta will resemble any other city. The way (as in location) Atlanta develops is so predictable, but it is also very strange. Also,I think that Downtown will most definately connect with midtown, but I think Midtown will have two "seperate, but equal" clusters (One at Peachtree and North Avenue, and the other at Peachtree and 10th-17th) Furthermore, Buckhead will grow (by the size and configurations of those lots, there won't be any "Boston-like" density), and there will be some impressive towers. It will extend further south along peachtree.

  4. Some Additional information...

During construction of the APM system, many ground transportation services will have their staging locations altered. Customer service representatives and special color coordinated signs will be available to assist passengers at the airport.

Expected Changes during the CONRAC construction:

Limousine: Travelers who have reservations with limousine companies will find sedan limousine operations relocated from the current limousine lot to the South hourly parking deck.

Taxicabs: There are no changes in the taxicab operation during this construction. However, the area will now have a red taxi sign to indicate its location.

Atlanta Metro Shuttles: Shuttle vans will be relocated from Island F to the Green Bus aisle beginning April 24, 2006.

Non-Metro Shuttles: Non-metro shuttle vans will be relocated from island E to the Green Bus aisle beginning April 24, 2006.

Hotel Shuttle Service: Beginning May 5, 2006, passengers will find hotel shuttles moved further west to the area labeled with the Pink Bus in the Ground Transportation Center.

  5. This Is From Marta's Website

    Governor Signs MARTA Legislation

Governor Sonny Perdue signed Senate Bill 115 into law in a ceremony this afternoon at the State Capitol. The bill allows MARTA to continue to use an additional 5% of sales tax collected as well as the interest on its capital reserve accounts for operating purposes until December 31, 2008. This equates to approximately $45 million in additional operating dollars over the next two and a half years that will allow the Authority to maintain and improve service for customers.

  6. Woah, it seems like the Ritz Carlton (Right Across The street) will have some competition.

This is great. It will be easily accessed by the Peachtree Center Marta Station (Anyone been on that GIGANTIC escalator?) and a quick walk to the Five points area and the Fairlie Poplar district.

  7. Here are a couple of photos I took at and in transition to the Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park Last Weekend. I have more but they are currently inaccessible, or are poor quality.

Some of the beautiful historic midtown homes. (A couple of blocks south of Midtown Promenade and Grady High School)

  8. Hartsfield Jackson International is experiencing many new developments; so many that is deserves a thread of it's own.

    From Hartsfield Jackson's Official Website

CONRAC Automated People Mover (APM) System

One of the key projects in the Hartsfield-Jackson Development Program is a new Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC). This Facility is designed to serve as a single area in which all rental car companies serving the airport are located. In order to provide easy customer access to this new facility located across Highway 85 from the airport, the City of Atlanta is procuring an Automated People Mover (APM) System which will operate from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to the new CONRAC facility, with an intermediate stop at the Georgia International Convention Center, as depicted in the graphic below.
