  1. Hey all-

I'm usually just a forum poster on the Virginia Beach / Norfolk area board, but this weekend I was fortunate enough to make it down to Charlotte for the first time in my life, and let me just say straight up, I wish I could be back there right now! The city is so beautiful, and the bbq festival was delicious to say the very least. Since this is a photo thread, I thought I'd attempt to share some of the better photos I took while I was down there, feel free to check them out at your liesure and let me know what you think: http://purdue.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2...amp;id=13701583

I absolutely can't wait to get back down there, and maybe even relocate in the future altogether.

I am a re-plant from Virginia Beach as of 1996, and you will love it if you relocate here.

  2. Onsite activity:

This morning there is a group of about 5 or 6 walking the site and reviewing the building plans. Looks like construction could start soon. ???

From my contact on the inside!

  3. Well, about 3 weeks ago, I had written my team, the Cleveland Indians off, w/ another choke job. But, thankfully, Detroit was also playing poorly. Well, the Tribe has gotten hot, and has won like 14 of their last 17, and will go for a sweep today in Minnesota. B/C of that, they now have the 3rd best record in the AL at 80-58, and have opened up a 7 game lead on the Tigers. I doubt many others saw that coming, I know as a fan I didn't b/c of how poorly they were playing.

Right now, it appears that the Red Sox, Angels, Indians, and Yankees will be in the playoffs in the AL. 3 Big market, big spending teams, and the small market, small spending Indians and their tight wadd owner who won't spend anything to improve the club. Is anyone else surprised by this turn of events the last few weeks? I know I am.

  4. Ok, so there are two cranes going up on the site, are they building two buildings at the same time?

This site, three buildings, will be a bit unique, as the parking for Catalyst will not be under the building, but next to it. Same for 12 I believe, which then means that there are actually 4 buildings, Cayalyst, 12, Office Tower, and parking garage to serve all three.

  5. Nothing but the site being fenced off. just like it has been, as far as I know.

I talked with my friend in the sales center this afternoon. She told me that Griffin has put their sign on the fence, and will begin moving equipment on site within the next 10 days. It's going up.

On a separate note, there was a drilling crew on the site of the former Renaissance Place on the corner of 10th and Tryon. Pinkard Collins is advertising space for a 400,000 sq ft office building.

  6. Maybe I'm confused but wasn't it the operators of the Coffee Cup that where fighting to save their business from the wrecking ball a few months ago? As I recall, the owners didn't want the building deemed historical it was the current operator. Now a couple of months later the operator decides to abandon this 'historically significant cinder block building' to move into a tower uptown. What gives? <_<

I guess Beazer -- or whoever it may be that does the final development -- will be applying to demo the building. Doesn't it take a year to reverse the historical status? I never was keen on keeping the building. I think that the business was locally nostalgic but the building wasn't historically significant. (I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree on with me.)

If any of you ate at The Coffee Cup, you might have a different opinion of it. The counter stools were broken, the grill was half clean, years of grease build up was incredible. I doubt it could pass an inspection. I am all for retaining things for posterity, but not at the expense of health.

  7. Spoke to someone in CDOT and they said the 277/Caldwell St interchange project should be going to construction by Aug/Sept. One tidbit I thought was interesting was the cross section is supposed to have a small barrier (curb?) separating auto from bike/ped traffic, which will be allowed a very wide outside "shoulder" area in which to cross the freeway.

I have seen some NCDOT trucks parked on that piece of land the last couple of days. This is an exciting happening. This act will begin to change Stonewall Street into a usable street connecting Second Ward more closely into the city.

  8. How old is that picture of the stadium though? The site plan that is posted just below it is from December 2005, well before any of the land transfer was finalized (or even officially proposed if I remember correctly). I knew they had selected an architectural firm but wasn't aware of any new renderings just yet.

Just a guess, but I believe you will see the outer edges of the stadium be iron gates, which will open at the end of the game to allow for easy egress for attendees. Retail as part of the building itself will probably be limited to under stand concessions, and maybe a team shop, probably around the corner of Mint and MLK. Planning views for the surrounding sites call for mixed use residental over retail, low rise, maybe 4 - 6 stories. Think of the land between Poplar - Mint, 3rd - 4th. Also the south east corner of MLK and Graham, and across the street from the stadium on Graham. Between 4th and Trade on Graham will be the Amtak Station complex which has retail, and the land surrounding the Presto Grill has plans nearing completion that will also be mixed use. The 12 complex with the condos over the hotel will have ground floor retail as well.

Current Knight Stadium has long sloping stands and huge concourses. Do not expect that here. These will be steeper stands, and the 2nd deck will be covering the lower level more, and have more seats.

  9. Ok, say new urbanism is the widespread norm. My favorite bakery is in the next town, the doctor I like is two towns away, and I now have to drive 20+ minutes to the old suburban sprawl to get to bestbuy because the local electronics shop is more expensive due to the small amount of people it caters. Is new urbanism really an answer? I think we should be designing cities around a 5-10 minute car drive, not a 5-10 minute walk.
