  1. Not according to what I've read and learned from the guy at RI Housing. Homestead is 15%. The actual tax rates listed on the RI Living link I posted above had said 50% (not including the homestead). If I have time later, I'll try giving the tax assessor's office a call. If that's really the new rate, I can't afford to buy a home in Providence (which would mean neither can most middle class residents), unless I buy a beat up foreclosure for $80k.

EDIT: here's what RI Living's tax page says for the 2007/2008:

    Providence (h) $22.84 50%

    and for the 2008/2009:

    Providence (h) $23.70 100%

that's more than double what it used to be. i assume it's a mistake, but it's there in writing and on the assessor's DB site as well.

  2. We won't know what the first gen kinks will be until it is out in the wild, but it seems like they've got a good thing going with this. If money were no object, I'd buy one now. But I agree, I'm waiting a bit to see what the kinks are, if any, and probably until the second gen. Its a big ticket, and I'm leaning toward getting a new iMac this fall, can't afford both. The service plans look reasonable, anyone in Providence use AT&T, how's the service locally?

I use AT&T for my BlackBerry. Service in Providence all the way up to Boston and down to Newport has so far worked flawlessly for me for both voice and data.

  3. john lombardi lives across the street from me, in the house he grew up in, and aside from the very few times he goes on vacation, he is at that house, with his wife, on Grove Street every single night. John may not be the sassy political animal you wish he was--but he's probably the first person i'd call if i ever was in a jam, and he has never hesitated to help me or anyone else in his ward who needed it. He helped us put together the very first adult swimming program in the community pool here in the neighborhood and last year we talked about ways to open up the tennis courts at classical for public use, something i see has been posted about in another thread.

It is one thing to try to dissect consipiracies (the cianci/paolino thing is truly delicious to anyone who has lived here long enough or did any research at all to know what kind of relationship they had); it is entirely another thing all together to post lies masquarading as "rumor."

and that, my friends, is one of the reasons why i don't post here anymore.

Thats what I thought, thanks for clearing that up. I see him around Broadway all the time, it did not just seem to be his style to hang out here and then skulk away to Cranston.

  4. would you care to divulge some more information to those of us who are not "in" on this news? if you're talking about paolino and cianci, i don't think there's a whole lot to worry about with either becoming mayor again (not to mention, cianci no longer lives in providence, of course either does lombardi, or so i've heard). and for some reason, i wanna say paolino lives in cranston now, but i could be wrong.

so what is this consolidation of power you're talking about?

I would think the lack of spelling it out for people indicates a reserve of judgement on Mothra's part. Which is of course their perogative.

Are you talking about John Lombardi? He lives in Providence in Federal Hill. Makes sense of course.

  5. On this board, impatience seems to be a virtue. :)

Nothing is completed on time. Its like the friend that almost everyone has that says they will arrive at a certain time and you immediately add half an hour. Whenever a project is announced, I add 3-6 months to a year at least depending on what it is. So far that has worked...

Unless there are serious financial consequences if not completed on time, i.e. the Westin.

  6. yeah, usually i get mine in about a week. i had it done 3 saturdays ago at the registry express.

oh, and another gripe i have with the DMV is that the express is the only one open beyond 3:30 and the only one open on saturdays, but they don't do new registrations. i was lucky when i moved here because the job i took was sun-thurs starting at 4 pm. so i was able to go on a friday... and sat there for 3 hours. in CT they all have the same hours and there's 1 day a week when they're open until 7 (thursdays i think).

anyways, it's still really crappy that they give you a stupid paper license. there's no reason for that. even the AAA offices in CT have the machines to make new licenses and i believe CT licenses are a bit "more difficult" to make.

I am actually going through this now. I need a license renewal and my wife needs a new registration. The DMV express is the only one that fits our schedule, but they dont do registrations as you pointed out. So now we either have to take seperate trips or just go at 830 tmw and hope we get taken care of quickly (probably have to camp out at 8am).

The paper thing is absolutely annoying. I laughed when I first got it. All it takes is a special printer, it would save so much time for people.
