  1. Just received this interesting news from a source. We'll see if it's right or not:

Sports Authority is closing its Magnolia Park location in August. Emloyees will be transferred to its Laurens Road location. Negotiations with Superplay USA, an indoor game center that was to occupy Montgomery Ward, permanently ceased a long time ago. Bass Pro Shops and Menin Development are finalizing a deal to occupy the entire Montgomery Ward/Sports Authority structure. The structure's size, over 200,000 square feet, is typical for a Bass Pro store. The deal, to be completed in the fall, would allow construction to begin in early 2012 with a November 2012 opening.

While I would be excited to get a Bass Pro Shops in Greenville (not that I would go there that often) I really hope it happens in Greer and not on the already overcrowded Woodruff Road. The reason is that if Greer got the BPS it would likely mean additional development so MAYBE Greer could finally get some more retail.

  2. The Taylors and Pebble Creek areas can support their own store out somewhere on Wade Hampton. Cherrydale has enough clout to pull from Furman and Travelers Rest.

You'd think so, but I can tell you as a resident of the Pebble Creek area we don't seem to get many new stores along Wade Hampton. No Kohl's, no newer restaurants, etc. The best hope I think we have is the Cherrydale area. I know about the (one time) proposed shopping center along 29 but I haven't seen anything happen with it. Instead we have a closed Winn Dixie, next to an out of date KMart, which is across the street from a close Burger King, which is across the street from a closed Arby's. You get the picture I think ...

  3. Well, that is interesting news! We have been talking about the possibility of Whole Foods adding a second Greenville location (which I believe you originally brought up), so it is interesting to hear that substantiated by the manager.

As for locations, a downtown location would be my first choice. I can see them being a great anchor in the Washington Square development, provided that ample parking is available in a very nearby building (for ease of loading/unloading groceries). :shades:

If not downtown, Whole Foods would be a huge boon for the Cherrydale area. Although it is not the shopping destination that Woodruff Road is, it is established enough to be a good location for them. It would draw from Paris Mountain residents, Montebello residents, and perhaps others from that side of town.

    What is everyone else thinking?

Cherrydale area as well for the same reasons you said. In addition, it would draw from the Taylors/Pebble Creek area too.

  4. Probably the people who prefer the Clock near BJU over Table 301 restaurants. :silly:

I would prefer the Clock over a Table 301 restaurant - but then I'd also prefer a good ethnic (Mexican/Indian/etc) or BBQ restaurant over the Clock (and thus over a Table 301 restaurant). And I also can't tell you the last time I was in a Ruby Tuesday's (yes like most people I have been to one)

  5. Interesting about the menu items named after Greenville landmarks and leaders. This would have been a perfect concept for The Green Room (another new downtown restaurant)!

My wife (who works downtown) got a menu from The Green Room as they were handing them out. She tells me that most items on the menu are $10 and up (or a sandwich for about $8 with no sides). Somehow or other based on the other competition in that space, I can't imagine that they will do well.

  6. I was at that show, but i was more than a few years ago...it was 9 years ago...Going when they come on Oct 17 too.

i dont think i would have put it so nicely but i can agree.

Has it reallly been 9 years? Wow. I won't be attending the 10/17 show as I have other plans already.

It's funny how times change too, these days I think most of the bands I go to play at the club level rather than the bigger places. Not to say that if certain tours/bands came through I would not go, but having already seen Kiss many times (including at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium and not the show where the guy fell and died) I felt the other plans took priority.

  7. They have brought in a lot and have plenty scheduled, I just wish it was someone I actually wanted to see. I would like to see Bruce Springsteen, but not enough to pay what they want for a ticket. Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd...bleh, shove spoons in my ears. The only other I'd maybe go see is Taylor Swift because she actually has talent (even though not a huge country fan) and, well...only if I were on the first few rows so I could get a nice long look at her! :w00t:

I saw Matchbox 20 a few years back (awesome!) and honestly that's just one of the very few bands I ever wanted to see there.

I saw Kiss a few years ago when they called it "Greenfield" at the end of the show - was great stuff. I would never see Matchbox 20 as I'd rather have a knife stuffed in my ears :)

Point being, there are a lot of tastes out there.

I DO NOT think the Bi Lo Center does a good job w/any variety in what they book. Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath w/Dio on vocals) and Judas Priest were shows that have been out on tour the last year or so. They were not booked, I would believe they would be a large draw for the BiLo Center as any hard rock/metal band seems to do quite well there. Other than the protesters out front (or during ticket sales or whatever).

I think what Greenville REALLY needs is a medium venue, something in between the Handlebar (clubs) and Bi Lo center to draw some different acts to stage. If only I had the money/know how/time :)

  8. Uh, this building is well inside the West End, connected to American Grocery Restaurant. The owner's name is interesting, Bada Bing LLC. Not sure what to think at this point, without any details.

Did anyone read the article in the paper a few days ago about the various projects making progress in downtown? One of the businesses mentioned is Rick Erwin's Nantucket Seafood Grill, which is planned for the first floor of the new Main @ Broad building.

Wasn't the Bada Bing the strip club/mob HQ on The Sopranos??? :)

  9. Many people think GSP is the most expensive airport in SC to fly from. That perception, isn't accurate.

Article on air fares at major SC airports:

    http://www.thestate.com/local/story/792544.html

So GSP is roughly $40 cheaper than Columbia. I don't think we compete with Columbia too much in terms of our traffic. It's more of the mindset of flying out of CLT or ATL which is mentioned in several comments on the site even for Columbia people (particularly Charlotte for them)

  10. Looks like swine flu may officially be in the Greenville metro. Now I know why I saw two people last night in Best Buy wearing surgical mask. So is swine flu a real crisis or media drama?

    http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20...0/YOURUPSTATE01

Were they wearing the masks to make a fashion statement? Because the masks don't serve any purpose in stopping the flu virus - it passes through them easily - unless they have a full blown respirator in them.

  11. :yahoo: Charter is finally getting some competition in the Greenville and Upstate markets. Article from GV News:

    http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20...EWS01/904280314

It's a shame we don't know timeline. I've had my fill of Charter after the issue I had this weekend with my DVR and the (lack of) support. My wife and I had been considering moving to AT&T + DirecTV but I had been hoping for UVerse after hearing about it online. Call me today AT&T for UVerse and I'll sign up

  12. Since vicupstate works there and didn't even hear about this, maybe IBM was just bluffing to get a better deal out of Dubuque. Wonder if they ever really opened up talks with Greenville?

I'm an IBMer as well and had not heard anything about this. In a company the size of IBM it's not unusual for folks not to know what all is going on (well speaking for myself). To be honest I couldn't tell you what probably 3/4s of the local IBM population does. And they probably can't tell you what I do either.

  13. I wonder if their is someone in China hankering for an upscale meat and three? You know, where you can get some collards, peas, mac and cheese and baked ham?

I don't know about in China, but now I do. Thanks a lot. Except for the peas you can keep those and give me some cornbread instead.

Meat and three's of course are a staple in this area.

My favorite meat and three, I'm sure due to proximity, is the Lil Rebel Restaurant. I know my wife goes to Gene's on a somewhat regular basis due to the fact she works downtown. So instead of finding Peking Duck point me to the other tasty meat and three places :)

  14. Hope this is the right place for this Taylors Retail Center opposed

This goes back to the discussion that was being held about the possibility of a Kohl's coming to the Taylors area. Looks like the County Council is going to oppose the zoning for it. I'm completely confused by this. They state that it's due to traffic is why they would oppose it (specifically traffic on 2 lane Saint Marks Road) - but I have to agree with the developer on this that MOST of the traffic would be from 29 which is 6 lanes already. So it's WIDER than Woodruff Road that is allowed to build just about anything it wants.

Anyone care to enlighten me on this? Or is it that Woodruff Road is in the City Limits so the county does not interfere with it?

  15. Wish I could compare, but I've never been to Lil Rebel. Is their food good?

Yeah we enjoy it very much. I'm partial to the country fried steak with okra, mac & cheese, pintos. I'm also a huge fan of the grilled ham & cheese (add grilled onions) plate. My wife usually gets a burger. She says she likes the burgers at Five Guys better but Lil Rebel is much closer to us as we live in the Pebble Creek area. When you order a plate expect so much food that you won't be able to eat it all. They heap the fries on. The cole slaw is good as well.

  16. WOW! I had never tried Ware's until yesterday. Fantastic burger! Anyone know the history of this place? How long it has been around? What the neat building used to be? Etc?

How was it compared to Lil Rebel? My wife and I go to Lil Rebel quite a bit but never seem to make it down to Ware's

  17. Wow! Thanks for the response. I have a few comments:

    1. I will check it out. When I was there last I pretty much stayed in the north/north east parts. So, I will check out the south side as well. I hope to see most of the town.

    2. How about Barb-b-que? Is there a place that all the locals swear by?

    3. Good to hear about Travellers Rest, we were left with a weird impression. We did drive down 25 waiting to see something, but it never came.

    4. I am a Software engineer. I hope to see more tech companies come in. I am looking to move in the spring of next year.

    6. Good to hear. Hopefully, T.S Faye will give you guys some much needed rain.

    8. Bummer on the property taxes on your cars. I was hoping to get away from that. It was a shock coming from Florida where there was no such beast and coming to Kentucky where I had to pay close to $200 every year to get my tag renewed. Oh well.

I hope to drive around Paris mountain as well.

Again thanks for your response. Hopefully some others will chime in as well.

  18. I disagree about this making Greenville a "nanny state." Teens aren't yet adults, and do not have the rights that adults have. They are minors, and as a result they cannot vote, cannot purchase cigarettes, cannot serve in the military, etc. They are not autonomous. Thus, restricting how late they can stay out without parental supervision is perfectly appropriate here.

If Greenville were trying to restrict how late adults could stay out, that would be a different story altogether.

As for giving teens things to do, who is supposed to invest in such an endeavor? Will you be among the first to risk thousands of your own dollars to start an entertainment complex/midnight basketball league/teen center?

I view it as the government doing the parent's job - hence the nanny state comment.

I don't have the money to risk, and quite frankly it's not my area of "expertise". Asking that question of me is like asking someone else on here if they are fronting the money for any of the Greenville projects they want to see get done.

I'm merely pointing out that there has always been a severe lack of things for teens in the Greenville area to do which leads to some of what you are seeing.
