  1. I agree with that. The rail corridors in this state were always used for connecticut cities by heavy rail. Anything less is a poor use of these corridors, one of Connecticut's best assets. The first place light rail should go is Farmington Avenue between downtown and West Hartford Center. Either way, the busway is a poor choice.

Now all we need is the line between Manchester and Willimantic on the way to Putnam and Boston become a train line again.

They should have never put in the walking path, what a waist of money.

How nice would it be to get on a train in Willimantic and be at south station in under 2 hours! I can only wish!

  2. The first was an article, the second is their sharp editorial with keen insights and observations. Why do I keep posting it, that I can't answer. I just feel the need to add whatever I come across to the topic.

The editorial is very similar to the original article and the article the day after the news broke. Geez.

I really hope the Courant can get through these hard times for newspapers. I really hate that new design, but who knows, maybe other newspapers follow the courant.

  3. Are you kidding me???? Rome's airport is huge! Why do you think it's not a good hub?

The only logical carrier that would fly Hartford to Rome would be Alitalia.

Alitalia doesn't have anywhere near the connection's KLM out of Amsterdam has or Delta/Air France out of CDG.

There are much better opportunities than Rome, AA to London with connections on British Airways and Lufthansa to Frankfurt will certainly come before Rome ever will.

On top of all that, Alitalia is bad shape as an airline. They have cut 100's of flights and many destinations including San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington and Montreal.

Hartford will never have a flight to Rome, at least not in the next 25 years.

  4. So, let's guess on the destinations:

    Paris, Charles DeGaulle

    London, Gatwick

or how about Rome or Munich?

I am pretty sure the "two new airlines" are domestic carriers.

As for as international service, lets try and keep the Amsterdam flight around before we go and add more service. I think the only real possible international destination would be Paris. Delta could possibly add service to CDG but I think they would cancel Amsterdam before doing that.

Rome would never happen, the airport isn't as big to offer connection possibilities like Paris or Amsterdam.

London is always possible since it is probably the largest O&D destination out of Hartford.

Munich won't happen. Frankfurt would be the logical choice if Lufthansa ever wanted to venture into Hartford. You may see that in the next 10-20 years, nothing sooner I don't think.

I say BDL will see 3-4 international destinations 15 years from now. Within the next 5 years maybe a total of 2.

  5. International service at Bradley, which has 224 daily flights to 34 nonstop destinations overall, will likely expand next year, he said. The airport also is expected to get two new carriers, said Frantz, who declined to reveal which airlines until those deals were finalized.

    Let the guessing begin....

I am going to say the following are possible.

    1) Airtran

    2) jetBlue

    3) Virgin

    4) Midwest or Frontier returns

  6. The MD88 is not as bad plane, esp Delta's, American's are a little older. Ive flown on just about every aircraft type, and they are roughlt all the same. Just be thankful it wasnt a small regional jet down to Atlanta.

As for getting more good flights back, good luck with that. I think the bleeding will stop soon if it hasnt already. The only other routes at risk for BDL i hink are NW's IND and maybe AA's STL, though that flight did survive a harsh STL cutback.

As for new opportunities, I do think FL (AirTran) and Jet Blue) will be at BDL within 5 years, though i think either of those would likely result in Delta ending their Florida Service (still a net gain though)

I think jetBlue could have much success at BDL, evan today with flight to:

Puerto Rico- There is 3 cities served by jetBlue in Puerto Rico and I think BDL could have non stops to at least 2.

Domincan Republic- Maybe a seasonal flight? Large Domican population in the area

Los Angeles- Now that Delta is gone, maybe a flight to Long Beach not only for LA traffic but conencting traffic on the west coast. Burbank could work as well but Long Beach would be prefered.

Oakland- Nobody has stepped into the San Francisco market since United left.

DEN- Now that frontier is gone, a similar product may work well.

Florida- If Delta cuts back more or leavs, huge oportunity

  7. Nice map.

From looking at the map, Hartford needs more residential down near the convention center and State house square. Constitution plaza needs something bad!

You forgot the East Hartford side of the river, that residential tower is ownership units.

Also, only 2 owner occupied buildings downtown is kind of lame.

  8. This flight has been on and off the past few years. I believe this was a seasonal flight since shortly after 9/11.

This is one of BDL's longest flights but there are still longer flights to Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Denver (seasonal now), Cancun, San Juan, Amsterdam that I can think of.

Salt Lake city, another long flight was discontinued last year. BDL never regained San Francisco service since it was cut after 9/11.

  9. Delta, the largest carrier at BDL now becomes evan bigger. I hope they add Paris to their destinations if the AMS flight continues to perform. Also, Salt Lake City would be nice to have back.

If NW and DL merge, the combined airline will serve the following cities-

    Atlanta

    Cinncinatti

    Columbus

    Ft. Meyers (Seasonal)

    Cancun (Seasonal)

    New York JFK

    Los Angeles

    Orlando

    Tampa

    Ft. Lauderdale

    West Palm Beach

    Detroit

    Amsterdam

    Minneapolis

    Memphis

    Indianapolis

  10. With the income of Hartford county and surrounding area's there really is not much in the way of luxury shopping options. Westfarms has small amount of stores, but really most people in this area have to go to NYC or Boston to get luxury clothing. Downtown Hartford could fill this need. And don't tell me the Hartford area couldn't support a Tiffany, Armani exchange. Burberry, or Versace store. These stores need to be added downtown. People need a reason to go downtown and shop. A family from Farmington wont travel downtown to go to a brookstone store or Gap. While these may be good for the conventions or few downtown residents, people from the burbs need a reason to travel downtown and shop! Come on!!!!!!

  11. Hate to be the guy with bad new, but I just read an article that said that Newburgh Int'l (Newburgh, NY) had their #1 in charge just come back from Europe....with the possibility of direct service by the end of this year. Apparently 12 unnamed airlines were "in talks"....mostly LLC's or charter airlines. This is NOT good for Bradley....AT ALL! If this actually happens BDL-AMS could be toast. :(

I really wouldn't worry about it. The possibility that Newburgh gets international flights is slim. Evan if they do, BDL is still in great shape for the AMS flight or another flight to Paris or London. I wouldn't worry about it at all. The catchment area Newburgh attracts has little affect on BDL. Most of the Danbury/Fairfield country residents go to NYC area airports as it is. BDL has all of Central, and Eastern Connecticut, and Western and Central Mass to draw on as well as Southern Vermont. That is a good 3-4 million people without Fairfield county.

  12. I agree, but I would think just barely viable. That is why I think this summer might be the turning point. Especially if the AA building does well. If in 6 months another 50 Apartments rent in H-21 and 10 more condos sell at the Met plus AA Building, that additional push should go a long way in encouraging retail. I am not completely concerned about new retail as much as I would like to see some of the existing businesses extend their hours as a responce to these residents.

How many of the units in Hartford 21 are corporate leases with nobody in them on weekends and in some cases whole weeks?

  13. After spending millions on a new complex in Bristol, I doubt they'll open a new studio downtown. Anyways the current project doesn't seem all that bad. I will agree Front Street missed it's opportunity to become really great. Oh well we'll have take what we can get now.

It doesn't have to be a big studio or anything, just a small one for maybe some of the smaller shows or ESPN radio.

  14. The biggest draw will be ESPN. Hopefully the developer can get some non food retailers to pepper around ESPN.

Lets see if ESPN in fact does have a location there. I wouldn't be surprises if they end up not putting one there. If they do indeed put something at Front street, I hope it isn't a scaled down ESPN Zone. ESPN should have a flagship location in Hartford with maybe a studio since Connecticut is their home.
