  1. for those who have been to El Coqui Mexicano, how big is this place and how is parking? thinking of having a group there for dinner on a saturday night...

    tia!

I went there with a group on Saturday and there wasn't a place to sit. It looked great, but we were on a time schedule and went somewhere else. I really want to go back, though.

  2. I like a good selection of tap beers. I typically go to Jaxs and have been to Big Daddy's as well. Is the selection better at Redlight?

They have about 15 taps. The stuff they get is usually more rare than Big Daddy's. Jax and Big Daddy's have stuff like Bass, Harp, New Castle, Orange Blossom Pilsner, Blue Moon, etc... Redlight Redlight goes a little farther on the beer nerd scale. It is a beer nerd bar but also great for people who just like to try new things. I'm up there constantly and drinking something new and different every time.

Their bottle selection is very good, too, and also more rare.

  3. Redlight Redlight has been open for a few weeks now at their new location on Bennett Rd., just across the street from Roxy Nightclub. Redlight Redlight is Orlando's premier bar for beer nerds. They now have 15 amazing taps and still have an incredible bottle selection. Come by and try something new.

  4. My wife and I both didn't like Il Pescatore. Any place that serves garlic bread on a big hot dog bun isn't a good Italian restaurant.

I have yet to find fantastic Italian in Orlando. Pannulo's on Park Ave. is always good, and they make their dishes pretty flavorful, but I wish they had more special dishes.

All I know is after one trip to the North End in Boston, you'll never find something that compares in Orlando.

    as for pizza...

Proccolino's is next to the Winn Dixie across the street and down a block and I think they have taken my award for Best Pizza in Orlando from Alphonso's in College Park. It's great.

  5. Somebody mentioned Ethos...

    How was it?

My wife and I rode our bikes past it a couple weeks ago but haven't been able to get there yet. Maybe this weekend. Neither of us are vegan, but we figured we'd still give it a shot. It smelled good as we rode past.

Also, I just wanted to give a plug for Drunken Monkey, on Bumby next to Beefy King. It's a great coffee shop and they actually have some pretty good food. It's cheap and it is a real coffee shop atmosphere.

  6. I would say that instead of it being gay-friendly that it's straight-friendly. It's not called "Mary's" for just any old reason. The original Hamburger Mary's was started in San Francisco and has locations in gayborhoods in five other cities. The location in Chicago has an upstairs bar with a stage where they have a variety of performances.

That's true. I don't really know what to call it, nor do I really care. I just wanted to make sure and throw it out there for the people who do care about that sort of thing. Like it or not, there are people out there who have a problem with it and they might not want to end up there. The place is good, a lot of fun, and I would bring my family, including children, there but others may not feel the same way.

    I'm just sayin....

  7. My wife, some friends and I went to Hamburger Mary's tonight and it was great. Their burgers are going to rival Johnny's Filling Station for best in Orlando, now. They were pretty damn good. The "Mary Tyler Smores" that you roast at your table were pretty cool, too.

Overall, we really liked it and will certainly be back. It is very gay-friendly, and I would almost call it overall a gay restaurant, but I would also consider it very kid-friendly. I'll leave it up to you. If you have any problem with "gay-ness" then it isn't for you. If not, then I strongly suggest it.

  8. I can't go to Bikkuri anymore, and it saddens me. It's right up the street from my house and it is reasonable, but I swear they put something on their fish to keep the color... or something.

It isn't every time, but a few times I have gone there and the tuna (I always get tuna) tasted like some kind of cleaning solvent. It was a strong flavor and smell. I have never experienced this at any other sushi place and I really don't know what the flavor/smell is. All I know is that I don't like it.

I still really like Ichiban. I think their portions (the fish inside the rolls) are HUGE compared to other places and have never had a single bad experience.

  9. I didn't see a separate thread for the UCF Medical School and Lake Nona area, but UCF got some great news today...

M.D. Anderson signed a deal with UCF and Lake Nona which will only mean TONS of future research $$$$$$$ for both UCF and M.D. Anderson!!!!!

UCF's new med school was already on the MAP with their agreements with Burnham Institute...and just the other day, the Veterans Administration selected the site right next to UCF's new med school as their location of their newest hospital...and now THIS news today!!!

    UNBELIEVABLE!!!

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando to move its research institute to Lake Nona

    Harry Wessel

    Sentinel Staff Writer

    December 20, 2007

Lake Nona's burgeoning "medical city" landed another plum Wednesday, with the announcement that M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando will move its Cancer Research Institute there to work with the University of Central Florida.

It was welcome news for Lake Nona, which earlier this month learned that one of its expected tenants, the Nemours Foundation, signed a contract on property for its proposed children's hospital nearly 2 miles away.

But the Lake Nona complex -- anchored by the UCF medical school and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, both of which have broken ground -- rebounded with two announcements this week:

On Tuesday the Tavistock Group, which owns Lake Nona, announced it had come to terms with the U.S. government for the sale of land for the long-awaited VA hospital.

And on Wednesday came the M.D. Anderson-UCF deal.

  10. I know dude! I want a tour of that office. I saw a pamphlet in their office with pictures of the different areas and it looks awesome. It even appears to go into Kuhns building next door. Though I have a hard time believing THAT many people bike to work. My coworker said it may just be a piece of abstract art. The office is choked full of it.

I'd do anything to get a job downtown, just for the oppertunity to ride my bike to work.

  11. Dr. Phillips Wal-mart looks good from the outside and is on the West side of 4.

Aren't you talking about Sand Lake Road and that's on the East side of 4.

Isn't there an old cliche about dressing up a piece of sh*t?

It's amazing how opposed to going UP we are in this entire region. All of Florida is pretty much a mess because everyone has to drive everywhere to get to everything. The entire state was built around the invention of the car... it sucks.

  12. Speaking of beer, has anyone been to the Orlando Brewing Co. on Atlanta? Bad location but great organic beer.

Also, I think Scruffy Murphys is moving in to the College Park location that used to be Gio's, and before that Adair's.

    Hopefully the location isn't cursed.

Orlando Brewing is fantastic. I just wish they were allowed to serve food. Those guys aren't afraid to make a beer that'll kick you in the butt. A lot of the brewhouse restaurants like Hops and BJs just don't get crazy enough for me. It's like they're afraid of going big and bold with their beer. Orlando Brewing isn't afraid!

  13. I hate pc ness but I agree. Should I say I don't usually go to the negro bars? Now there surely are bars mostly or totally patronized by black people, but me saying it like that leads one to think that I don't go there because I don't care for 'those people'.

So a breeder bar, that's any bar with straight people? Or just a pick-up joint?

I was thinking a "breeder bar" is a family friendly bar, where young couples bring their little snotnosed kids to run around and scream all over the place while mommy and daddy get drunk to forget how miserable they are for having children.

Most sportsbar type places match this description.

  14. Am I correct in assuming District 5 is done?

The sign is covered up with a plastic "Hotel and Diner Now Open!" sign.

Looks like The Lexington people have given up all hope. They've declared bankruptcy and are now trying to salvage anything by bringing the property back to what it was before they got hold of it.

  15. Chemmie I agree 110%, any sports bar facility would do handsome business in the CBD. Assuming no additional projects were built, with the current vacancies in mind where would you guys expect a sports bar to do the best?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Maybe a little farther way in Colonialtown, like Bumby and Colonial... Or near Mills and Virginia, once the project is built. That way you could bring in traffic from Winter Park and farther east on Colonial.

Rent would be so expensive in one of the new buildings, but around Lake Eola, Thornton Park would be great, obviously.

The majority of people living in that area now are young professionals who, most likely, would enjoy watching some sports, drinking beer and eating wings. What's not to like about that??

Not everything downtown needs to be stuffy and snooty.

I'm just reminded of Jocks and Jills in Atlanta. The downtown one is HUGE and has TVs everywhere. It's almost a local tourist destination on gamedays. It is packed.

Anyone want to lend me about a million dollars or so? I'll get this thing built.

  16. I haven't ventured in there, but I did notice they have a special on crab legs.

I'm actually right about to go over there for the crab legs special on Tuesdays, $12.99 for all-you-can-eat. Can't beat the price.

Somebody mentioned Mexican. Garibaldi, near the corner of Semoran and Colonial is my favorite.

  17. "Friends" on Mills near Virginia is fantastic. I just got back from there and I can't say enough. The prices are great and the food is delicious. Their menu has something for everyone. Sandwiches to steaks. My wife got a gorgonzola stuffed pasta with beef tips and it was delicious. Those little gorgonzola pastas were insane. Mmmm...

To top it off, we had some "Chocolate Whopper Cake". Wow. They mix in malted milk balls with the icing and it's pretty darn good.

Between La Cucina last week and Friends this week, it looks like I can just eat right on Mills from now on. Another great experience.

  18. I remember that, that's one of the main problems with Orlando, the govt seems to have the idea that if Disney didn't build it then it's not worth it......... I'll always remember when the Orlando club/dance scene made the headlines of Rolling Stone magazine how hard Hood worked to shut the clubs down. It always seemed funny that the city supported Universal CityWalk within the city limits of Orlando, wonder what the city recvd($$) for supporting a nightclub district at Universal. It must have been worth it, that was also the final nail on Church Street's coffin. That may have been for the best, I prefer what is happening on Church St. now as opposed to the old tourist attraction, as long as all the new development is a success. Also "Light Up Orlando" could have turned in to some sort of traditional street party, like Gasparilla, Mardi Gras, Guavaween, where the residents of the city could relax and have a good time once a year and not be herded off in to roped off "beer drinking" areas. And one more complaint....at the time the Majic were in the playoffs/championship the World Cup Soccer thing was going on in Orlando and Mayor Hood wanted to make the dome on top of city hall in to a soccer ball.....hello, local basketball team makes big, mayor doesn't give a crap.......Hopefully it's all been a lesson and we are much more pro-Orlando now and finally ready to do something for the residents of this city. Let the mouse now be in the shadow of Orlando, and Orlando no longer be in the shadow of the mouse!

Glenda Hood reminded me of the woman owner of the Cleveland Indians in the "Major League" movies. It's as if she was actually trying to bend us over and letting us all know about it.

  19. I have no idea how you guys got onto I-Drive from the Church Street topic, but here's something to get back on track. Kuhn is possibly looking for retail tenants for a yet to be detailed Church Street project, and H&M is looking for it's first Orlando location, hummm......... :whistling:

Just a little something from your friend who brought you the 'Ikea story'.

    Whoa.

My wife is going to flip when she hears this. She loves H&M.

When we were in Amsterdam, she spent a long time in there, and a lot of money. But, even with the piss-poor exchange rate, it was still cheaper than most retailers here in the states for comparable clothing. H&M is a great store.
