  1. Yeah we are talking about Paul McCartney. People around the country came to see him. Salem Pkwy and Highway 52 just can't handle that kind of traffic. The highway infrastructure is decades behind. It was so bad people were saying they'd never come back there for an event. Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte have the infrastructure to handle it. Local representatives need to lobby for more state and federal funds. I wonder if there is a way to widen Highway 52?

Wonder why the decided on a venue in Winston then and not the other 3 larger cities here and I’m sure they can widen it but probably only in sections just like here on battleground. I wish battleground was 3 lanes the whole way to downtown but there just isn’t enough real-estate to do so. Does Winston have plans to build a loop around the city?

  2. This is a perfect example as to why Winston-Salem's highway infrastructure really needs to be upgraded.

Wow, the city really tried to blame a thunderstorm? Lol that is HILARIOUS!!!! Winston traffic is terrible when it’s sunny but they try to blame it on that? Come on now lol they have to do better. Why can’t they just accept they need to do better and spend the money for new highway infrastructure?

  3. Honestly, I am let down with this news. If I wasn't mistaken this hotel with the parking lot was going be 15-18 stories, with a 6 story parking deck with shops under it. Then it downsizes to 12 & 5, now 11 & 5.  At the beginning of this project I was so excited for this project and the 20 story building Roy Carroll was planning. Thinking how Greensboro's Skyline was going to transform and grow. Every time I think Greensboro downtown is about to progress and match what a city of 300,000 plus should be, they {The City} all ways let us down with the plans. Why is it this city is so slow or having road blocks in this area? I know we are not Charlotte or Raleigh, but heck we can't even match Durham, at least they have a 28 story high rise building with apts. Winston-Salem skyline is still more larger than us and both cities populations are under us. What puzzles me is Greensboro population is almost equals to other cities like Orlando, Fla, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St. Paul, Minn and Newark, NJ., but their skylines are way bigger and prettier than ours. It is many things I love about this city, but their are some things that make me rubbed my head about the red tape and road blocks this city place on developers. Not trying to be ugly or mean, but being honest and a bit let down over the revised plans and other things that got cancelled.  You can tell I have a love for skylines, lol!!!

I think we don’t have a skyline like comparable cities by size because we aren’t a big tourist city as those are and in my opinion Greensboro as a whole is a disappointment. Greensboro is full of people who doesn’t like evolution and want things to stay the same as they were 30 years ago when everyone knew everybody and didn’t have a claim to fame for the world to attract people. And on top of that city leaders seem to be so incompetent as to what it takes for Greensboro to be in the spotlight to make people want to live here, let alone visit. Citizens of Greensboro want it to be a country town forever and it’s disgusting to me. I hate someone who despise change and so closed minded as this city seems to be.

  4. Its 11 total. Was 12 until the city reduced the deck height by one floor.
I must say though I'm not digging the east side of the hotel. They could have masked the deck below the hotel so that it wouldn't look like a generic parking deck and the hotel on this side is basically a cube. The front is ok. What is it with downtown Greensboro developers and their designs?
Based on how the hotel is going up this does appear to be the final design. One would hope there are at least a few last minute changes to spruce the design up a little.

I agree but I actually like the new design of the hotel vs the old renderings. Looking at the current construction it doesn’t seem like a deck with be directly below the hotel, looks like it’s just sitting beside it to me but I could be wrong. They definitely could’ve come up with a better design for the deck in general though

  5. Since I-840 will be completed fairly soon, can we look at eliminating some of the highways inside of the loop?

Like what is the point of O'Henry Blvd (US-29 between BUS-85 and US-70)?  Through traffic coming in on I-85 from Charlotte is already encouraged to follow the southeastern part of the loop, and can just continue onto I-840.  Through traffic coming in from the west on I-40 will just loop around on I-840.  Same for the east.  US-421 traffic coming in from the south can loop around as well.  I think a number of freeways inside the urban loop could be removed with relatively little impact to local traffic.

I’m sure the people who live in the area of those highways find them very purposeful. I use to live northeast and I used 29 every single day even with the eastern portion of the loop being completed. The loop won’t cut commute times down for everyone. See both sides of the coin and think about how other have to get around from their neighborhoods. Greensboro has a whole city of people to serve to get to and from work, school, etc.

  6. Really not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm finding it hard to get excited about this. The site plan is horrible. The developer touts the location along the new greenway, but then the greenway frontage consists of - a blank wall and a loading dock? I think that squanders the potential of what an urban trail can be (look at Charlotte's Rail Trail - the new development there has active uses fronting directly onto the trail). And as if a 2-story parking deck wasn't enough, the building is also surrounded by a moat of surface parking. The entire design is centered around the needs of motor vehicles, while the destination for actual human beings is perched precariously on top. But hey, at least it has nice brick?
Again, I'm not trying to be harsh, but I want better for my hometown.

I agree with that about the greenway but maybe the art around midtown will will make this project more vibrant like what he has down the the movie theater and other buildings around midtown.

  7. I agree with you as I normally do. All i'm saying is let's not count our chickens before they hatch.
In today's business climate, things can change constantly and it's happening more frequently. Corporate management changes, economic changes, societal changes, political changes, etc. could all make the future a lot less certain and unpredictable.

Personal opinion, I don’t think this would be considered counting our chickens before they hatch because no doubt about it, this country is definitely a car country and we are definitely focused on a cleaner future. With this generation being the driving force to a cleaner future and healthy lifestyles, I think they will definitely expand on the future.

  8. what Toyota execs said about choosing the Megasite
""With its commitment to electrified vehicles, Reynolds indicated the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite will be the long-term solution to its hybrid and battery-electric vehicle needs. He told the audience Toyota selected North Carolina and the megasite for five main reasons:
An extensive and well maintained highway and railway system.
    A world-renowned education system.
An outstanding and diverse workforce not only to hire from, but also to train and develop.
Four international airports and two seaports. (“We're going to need them,” Reynolds said.)
North Carolina is consistently ranked as one of the top states for doing business.
These five strengths,” Reynolds said, “will help Toyota remain a global leader in electrified vehicles.”
During the announcement, a number of speakers referenced the 2018 near-miss with the Toyota-Mazda vehicle assembly plant that ultimately chose Alabama over the megasite. Reynolds said Toyota’s experience here played a vital role in the company choosing the site and the site over nine other competing states.  “Let's put it this way — we didn't have to reintroduce ourselves to anybody because we knew everybody,” Reynolds told Triad Business Journal. “But we also started with a firm base of knowledge that I really think was one of the competitive advantages for North Carolina as compared to other states. And what we also found was an openness and a willingness to work with us. Even though the first project didn't come through, there was just this willingness to improve the the site here and and really do a better job for aligning better with our needs.”""
This site was chosen over 9 competing sites in 9 other states.
    https://www.bizjournals.com/triad/news/2021/12/06/toyota-executive-only-the-beginning.html

From reading that article, it definitely sounds as if they are going to expand in the coming years considering they are projecting that 70% of their sales will come from electric vehicles with it being only about 25% currently. That is great news. They will have a huge footprint in NC.

  9. ...is Greensboro becoming a boom town?

Let’s hope so, everything seems to be happening so fast and back to back now. I’m so excited to see how this translate to develop around the city and downtown

  10. Thousands more jobs coming to Greensboro! 2,000 to be exact and that's on top of the Toyota plant and possible aircraft manufacturer!
A third jobs announcement is being reported.
, Amazon is planning to build a 2-million-square-foot fulfillment center that will employ about 2,000 people at a site on Ritters Lake Road between Randleman Road and South Elm-Eugene Street near I-85 in Greensboro. The fulfillment center will be twice the size of the one in Kernersville. Greensboro City Council approved annexation of the site.  The Kernersville location is actually in Guilford County so this would be the second Amazon fulfillment center in the county.
Between the three projects we are talking about 7,500 jobs! That is if Toyota builds phase II talked about in the media which I believe will be an electric car assembly plant next to the battery plant. Most of these jobs are high paying. The median income will increase in Greensboro and Guilford County (which leads to other great things for the area btw). Jobs numbers like this is also what leads to rapid population growth. If all three come to pass it will be the largest economic growth for the Greensboro area in decades and these projects may lead to even more jobs announcements in the future. I believe these announcements will set a chain reaction for things the area has been seeking for years.
7,500 jobs is a lot but that doesn't even include spin-off associated jobs coming from suppliers and associated industries.

  11. No, this is also 1750 jobs per the story (and headline) cited.
That's 3500 good jobs between two employees coming soon. Yuge!

Understood, the article I seen before didn’t state that but either way it’s a win for the triad community. New jobs, new developments!

  12. 1,750 job! This would be a pretty big operation and would be the second airplane manufacturer at PTI. The first being Honda Aircraft Company (HondaJet) and on the heels of the Toyota news!
    https://greensboro.com/business/local/game-changer-could-bring-at-least-1-750-jobs-to-piedmont-triad-international-airport/article_3518db68-8332-55a0-bf64-be34a44fbeed.html#tracking-source=home-breaking

1,750 jobs is only for the Toyota plant, for the airport expansion it doesn’t specify exactly how many jobs will be created. Only said “over a thousand”

  13. In other business news sounds like HondaJet could be expanding.   From Business NC morning email:
""Big aircraft project headed to Greensboro?
    (Associated Press)
State lawmakers in Raleigh approved changes to the new state budget that includes $107 million for Piedmont Triad International Airport improvements should an unnamed airplane manufacturer expand at the Guilford County site. The so-called “Project Thunderbird” cites incentives including $15M for site work, $35M for roadwork and $57M for airplane hangars. The money hinges on new jobs that would pay $60,000 annually. ""

I was wondering what was going on, they have cleared a lot of land by the airport and seem to be doing a lot of prep for whatever’s coming to that area. I was assuming it would be some sort of airport expansion but looks like it’s Honda which is still great news

  14. Yes all the major assembly plants in the area and Thomas Built Buses would be one of them.   Freightliner makes heavy duty trucks in Rowan and Gaston Counties.  Plus Arrival a British maker of small electric delivery trucks in starting up production in 2 plants in the Charlotte area and their North American HQ is in Charlotte too.

Yes, Freightliner and TBB are both own by the same company, parent company is Daimler located in Germany
