If anyone thinks that AA wouldn't abandon CLT I would like to show you PIT. To a lesser extent the shell of what we do in PHL these days. ALSO if you think CLT bathrooms are gross....go check out the bathrooms in PHL. Was there yesterday, literally graffiti carved into the toilet seats and they have painted the stalls walls doors everything in this taupe color that reminds me of what a prison looks like on TV.
CLT is definitely over crowded, no doubt, but it's a balancing act for the city and the airline.

The cuts are a lot less deep than I thought, and aren't too surprising...I am kind of surprised to see them close most of their South American stations. Their intra-west Los Angeles network performed horribly - routes were flying with just a 50 percent load factor. The JetBlue model just doesn't work in California...Virgin America also figured this out. Californians actually prefer the cattle-car, no-frills Southwest-style of flying.
It's my understanding that their European network also performs horribly, but the company believes the losses are worthwhile (for now).
JetBlue has tried a number things over the years that simply did not work - their former hub/focus city at Washington Dulles comes to mind. They need to focus their assets on their core markets of NYC and Boston - particularly Boston, where their market share has declined since the pandemic.
Glad to see Charlotte remains.
As an AA employee, I would love to see AA gain more market share back in new york and boston. Heck, even LAX. But the slot/gate situation everywhere puts a damper on that.

American is severely gate constrained. D concourse is a disaster and severely limits international flying. Perhaps AA using some of a north for intl departure gates frees up space for domestic flights?

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see where it says in there that B and C will be included...
You are right. I misread that. It says that it lays the groundwork for it essentially. Guessing we will see construction on that fairly soon after the expansion though.
AA desperately needs the gates. And we need customs to be expanded.

The land use plan shows a direct connection to 85.
edit: link to airport site with RFP and land use plan docs.
it says winter 2024 for the latest update, so this is good newer info.

Over at the airport today for my volunteer job helping the thousands from Fort Jackson come through CLT to their home destinations. I worked n the afternoon which seem to be mainly west coast flights. Lots of guys and gals heading to LAX. Met 4 future Coasties (new Coast Guard recruits) who missed their connection to Philadelphia incoming from Richmond. They will be training over Christmas in Cape May NJ where the Coast Guard training center is (did not know that) They were asking why they would have to fly to NC from VA to get to PA? I explained how the hub was developed here and Richmond had their chance as it was Piedmont Airlines first choice and they did not seem interested. Then Piedmont came to CLT and the rest as we say is history.
Operation Exodus: Thousands of soldiers returning home for the holidays (msn.com)
walking around the new terminal I think the signage is much better and clearer than in the past. LIke the UNC Charlotte banners they get a lot of looks going into the C Concourse. Somewhat crowded but I would not say packed.
Thanks for volunteering. Always amazed in the Airport during this week.
Separate I'm pretty sure there's a non-stop to PHL from ric

On CLT news the east side of the terminal front opened.

It has always seemed to me that the open space between the parking garages was left there for 2 future rail lines.
Could put the trains on the first floor. And a hotel above it. No reason why not. Might even be interesting.

Needs to be turned into a doppler radar tower...
I would rather it be torn down, and a walkway between e and A put in. Or, a nice large hotel. Marriott or Hilton.

Current generation fiber optic systems are extremely fast, lightweight, and reliable. The screens these days detect heat rather than touch - so you don't need to tap incessantly and disturb your neighbor.
On the 25 or so flights I've taken this year with PTVs - I haven't had a single incident of one crashing or any sort of problems. I actually can't think of the last instance when my monitor crashed - I think it was on a US A332 10 or so years ago. That system that they had installed was horribly slow and clunky, and I remember it being difficult to physically tap items on the screen. Current systems are entirely different.
On the contrary, I can often not get streaming IFE to work. Plus, my AirPods won't make it through an entire transcontinental flight without needing a charge. By that time comes around, my phone will likely need a charge, too. You can't charge your iPhone and have headphones plugged in at the same time. Watching things on my laptop is uncomfortable because then you need to have the tray table down the entire time.
It's something that people clearly care about - United is spending a ton to reinstall seatback video onto its domestic mainline fleet.
I'm clearly in the minority here. For reference I spend 100s maybe 1000s of hours a year dead heading around the system on our fleet and have only had issues at most 3 times. Sony noise cancelling earbuds for a few years (lost one). Now pixel buds pro. They will almost always last a CLT to lax flight with no recharge. But I get it. People like the fancy looking screen.
Typically i watch on an iPad or my surface pro. Seems to last the entire flight or close to it.
As an employee, I do wish we did more to stay competitive with dal and ual. I did notice recently that we have updated the in-flight snacks in coach. Not sure if that's only on certain flights.

Eventually, there will come a time when it is far more costly to continuously update the terminal (and the old infrastructure begins to affect AA's bottom line) than it is to just replace it outright.
AA doesn't care about anything related to the overall passenger experience - the airline has bragged about ripping out IFE from the domestic fleet and the CRO has repeatedly said AA does not compete on anything service/experience related - the schedule is the product.
If AA had its way the terminal at CLT would probably look like this (though it does often feel like this on B/C these days):
I still don't understand why everyone is upset about not having IFE in the headrest. I can't stand in seat IFE. It's usually slow. Unreliable. Plus every single announcement made on the airplane pauses whatever I'm watching and I get to listen to the announcement and not my show.
When it's on my device that doesn't happen. Are people really insisting that they don't have a device to watch something on?

Some things I noticed last night when flying out last night:
- They installed extra, new LED lighting in the atrium. The atrium might have been a little dim before, but it is extremely bright now. They also installed new overhead way-finding pendant signs in the atrium. It kind of makes the space look busy, but it was needed.
- I wonder what the plan is for the A connector that takes you from the atrium to A/A North. It's just a series of moving walkways surrounded by what looks like temporary walls. I'm not sure if they planned to install some sort of public art or put in windows but it feels very claustrophobic.
- The first series of moving walkways on the A North connector is still surrounded by temporary walls - and has been for the entire summer. I can't imagine it is a simply moving walkway repair (because they would just block off the walkways if so) so I can't figure out what is going on.
- United's growth at CLT as part of the United Next program is pretty incredible - it's impressive how much they have grown. There were three United 737s boarding at once when I landed from IAD the other day. The agent at the Amex Centurion Lounge said that United was looking into building a club on A - but I can't see it. United doesn't have its own employees in Charlotte (other than a station manager - it's a contract station) and I believe clubs are operated by internal United employees. Charlotte wasn't one of the stations that United announced it would insource (but Raleigh was - which does now have a United Club) last month, so I can't see it.
The beginning of the A North concourse did not have moving sidewalks. That will be an addition that wasn't there when it opened. A welcomed one.

It seems to me that the South cargo area is becoming quite crowded. When the new taxiway opens connecting the south end of the airport it looks like to me that Amazon loses its place to park. Anybody know if there is a new cargo facility in the works?
Seems to me that on the Northwest side of the airport between what will be the new runway and the current 36L there could be some space in that area that would be near the Amazon warehouses on Wilkinson?
-
Bizarre. If they need the length I get it, but that airport isn't busy enough to justify an additional runway. Not sure how we get boned on the length here in Charlotte.
-
For what reason would Raleigh ever need a third parallel??????

You must have just missed my pushback from d8. Was great to see the 340 again. It was pretty post near miss with the thunderstorm north of the airport.

All of this was in the destination CLT website but it seems it's all gone sadly.

The amex lounge required a 3 story many million dollar addition. Took years. The old ba lounge is a food area, maybe it could be converted back, but you would be reducing food options down in d by like half.
I agree on the mezzanine area, but if they're going to build a huge addition upstairs with what is reported to be an enormous lounge, why waste the money on building a short term (temporary) lounge.
I would argue for dropping a few gates in e con and building a smaller lounge there. Or something near A with the international departures down there and the soon to be additional AA gates in that area.
Who knows what the future holds here, but frankly if you were running an airline that's practically printing money in Charlotte would you disrupt that so you can offer a lounge to a very small contingent of passengers?(most pax are group 9 non business passengers)
I wouldn't. I would just wait for the additions that are planned and keep improving slowly.
Speaking of additions the new taxiways and runway construction seems to be full speed ahead recently.

Charlotte-Douglas Airport (CLT) Expansion

Apparently the airport has purchased the tail section of an old AA md80 for display somewhere in the new terminal. Should be interesting
