  1. Glad to be back richyb83. It was an interesting year, I've got plenty of stories that one day soon I'll divulge.

I gotta say, I like the new split plan. My only concern with this new plan is the it will cause a bottleneck where I12 splits and then rejoins at the I10 college-bound bridge. I can see a lot of people not heading towards college getting confused with the new layout and trying to get off the College Dr. route. Then again, I'm not a traffic engineer....just a Baton Rouge politico.

It's going to help.    I do think there is going to be significant demand for truck/big rig focused businesses on Airline near Cortana.   And also additional demand for fast casual restaurants along the routes leading to Cortana that will be geared towards the workers commuting in and out all day.  So I hope to see everything from a Love's Travel Stops store in the Cortana area to new Starbucks/Panera/ALDI Grocery Store/ McDonalds along Airline or Florida.   I don't think the big-rig oriented businesses will be anywhere near Bonne Carre, but the new restaurants and stores certainly will be.

I know these jobs are not the same as a major corporate HQ, but I'm very excited for them.    Baton Rouge has never had a problem attracting skilled industrial employers.   In fact the region has a very robust middle class and a powerful industrial base thanks to all the petrochemical jobs, refineries, and manufacturing.

The area struggled to attract employers for unskilled labor as well as high paying white collar jobs.    Amazon moves the needle on the unskilled labor market, which feature low wages and high unemployment in Baton Rouge.     If we can get Target, Lowe's, and other e-commerce related fulfillment centers into the metro area, we would be shorting up a big part of the area's economy while also diversifying it to some extent.    Then we can hopefully focus on growing our white collar job market with a few regional HQ or tech center recruits.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

Baton Rouge has always been a rather middle-class city. The Amazon center allows us to diversify our economy, expand economic opportunities, and will probably open the door to a decent revitalization of commerce and industry along Florida.

I'm interested to see if this is successful, especially in light of the recent Amazon announcement. Would be quite the historical irony if the redevelopment of Cortana into an Amazon facility gave a second lease of life to the old Bon Marche site.

Yep...that's a Baton Rouge-New Orleans rail link.   I only wish they were planning to move beyond Baton Rouge to Shreveport and Dallas.

It would be ideal if they would have the Houston line terminate in Baton Rouge and build a new line to connect Baton Rouge to Mobile rather than Mobile to NOLA. Doing so would add more traffic to the BR-NOLA line and turn the city into a larger rail hub. Would definitely open the door to further expansion to Shreveport/Dallas or maybe even Little Rock.

  5. Call me old fashioned, but I'm not supportive of the entire expansion scheme.

I'd rather see political will and capital go into the construction of a loop and new bridge than simply over-expanding the existing interstate. So many new businesses and neighborhoods have grown up around the existing interstate and I'd hate to see them demolished or their business impaired by an expansion that will not, in the long run, alleviate traffic issues. By the time the expansion is over, traffic will be just as a bad as it is now. DOTD's are dependent on induced demand to survive, but as a result, it kills our cities.

Going to be interesting to watch unfold ...

Some of those proposed boundaries are whack! The way it takes a section of just Coursey near Sherwood Commons making it look like a jig saw puzzle. I expect some places to be annexed by BR before it's all said & done(Mall  of La. & Celtic Studio previously).  Like Siegen Lane/Industriplex....Perkins Rowe in St.George?

Does the "ORANGE" precincts that Voted "No"  get  to stay out ??  That would make St.George roughly 1/3 smaller. The new city"GREEN" would basically be EAST of Pecue /Stumberg...but get fragmented  chunks University Club & Westminster

Odds are...yes. There's still plenty of time for the final boundaries to be worked out and I have a feeling that when all is said and done, Pecue Lane/Highland Rd. will become the main dividing line between the two cities.

The biggest question is how our Parish government changes after this. Frankly, I think BR reformers should try and push for a New York Borough like form of government.

Federal grant for Gulf Coast passenger rail could be good sign for BR-NO line

Hearing Republicans will support this in the next legislative session.

Watch out folks, Baton Rouge Republicans focused on economic growth are about to start governing our state. Expect some changes.

This is all a great justification for shutting down BTR and building a new airport either along I-12 between Baton Rouge and Hammond or along I-10 between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

I am all for a new airport on I-12. It would make since for Louisiana to have two major airports in the south-east, one on I-12 and one on I-10. Would aid development.

After seeing the architectural renderings of this library, then seeing more of this library get constructed, fixed, reconstructed, etc.........I am now more certain than ever that this is the ugliest building I've ever seen.

It was a huge waste of public funds and time.

  11. Map I made a while back for a potential redevelopment plan of the overpass area once the interstate ramp is removed:

I believe I intended the pink to be public parking garages and new shops/restaurant/office space on ground level. Green obviously park space, white is building (existing and new), dark grey is parking lot.

    When will it begin?

It's still the same 4 lanes with the same concrete pavement in most spots.

Rumor I'm hearing is that the plan is being scaled back and isn't going to really be a diet anymore. I'm hearing just new turning lanes and new sidewalks, nothing more.

    This.

The state has somehow managed to raise taxes AND reduce funding to higher education.   I'm not sure where the additional dollars are going, but it certainly isn't to higher ed or infrastructure.

It doesn't help that LSU's current leadership is an abject failure when it comes to raising private dollars.    A lot of alumni (including this one) refused to donate a single dollar until both Alexander and Alleva were shown the door.    Half the problem has been solved by Alleva's firing (seriously, who looks at how the Duke LaCrosse situation was handled and says "yep, that's our guy...let's hire him now"?!?).

There will be much tighter connections between the alumni community and "the mother ship" when Alexander is booted.   Which means more private donations to LSU, which means that LSU's science and technology offerings may one day rival their business and law schools in terms of academic competence and growth.

I have my hopes up.  The way LSU handled Aleva's departure was so uncharacteristically competent that I am not sure if it was just a fluke or if they are actually changing.

The truth is that Baton Rouge's fortunes would improve greatly if leadership at LSU were better.    I know that F. King Alexander put his house on the market.    He knows which way the wind is blowing.    LSU will have a new President very soon, and hopefully the current governor won't be in office much longer to influence that decision.

    This. This a billion times.

As a current LSU Student, we are craving new leadership. LSU admin is incompetent and fails both current students, alumni, and the state as a whole. When Alexander is gone, depending on the replacement, things will be better. Much needed also is a sea change in student leadership which often serves as a mouth-piece for Alexander. They're also insufferable.

So has anyone heard any of the conspiracy theories about 5G waves? Like in that first Kingsman movie (aka Illuminati: The Movie)?

80 small cell towers planned in Baton Rouge area could lay foundation for 5G infrastructure

    CAITIE BURKES
    October 23, 2018

Roughly 80 permits are in the works for AT&T small cell towers throughout East Baton Rouge Parish, says city-parish permitting official David Cobb, a move AT&T officials say will lay the foundation for Baton Rouge to become a “smart city.”

Just a few months ago, local officials told Daily Report the city-parish would likely be slow to upgrade to 5G technology in its infrastructure, even if Mayor Sharon Weston Broome’s revived half-cent roads tax proposalpasses.

But the installation of small cell towers—small antennas fixed to existing structures like traffic signals, buildings, streetlights and poles—could hasten that process for Baton Rouge, offering faster wireless internet speeds and providing more and targeted network capacity for actions like streaming movies and music.

    https://www.businessreport.com/article/80-small-cell-towers-planned-baton-rouge-lay-foundation-5g-infrastructure

There are genuine safety risks associated with the cell towers. 5G waves are smaller and carry more information meaning they're more dangerous if you're standing too close.

Also, smart city policies are actually very very helpful for cities and city growth.

I'm glad people are trying to take charge in their community instead of just not caring.

I support St. George.   What is already a part of another city is off limits, but what is unincorporated should be left up to the people who live there to decide.   Baton Rouge elected not to annex that area as it developed decades ago.     If they can get a good school district up and running, maybe it will help improve the Parish's fortunes and help the Capital area attract and retain better employers and professionals.   That is the rising tide that will lift all ships, including Baton Rouge's skiff in the long term.

Anyone opting to buy a home or move to the Baton Rouge area should have a broad range of options within the boundaries of East Baton Rouge parish.   You shouldn't have to move to Ascension or Livingston to get good schools.    And your offspring shouldn't have to move to Houston or Atlanta to get good jobs.

    This.

  16. Here's some new renderings for the Brother Berry Student Center being built at CHS. Back in July construction was planned to begin at the end of this year or May of 2019. It's planned to take 15-16 months to build.
