Financial education should come from the home too.
Kinda hard to teach something you were never taught though.

I was wondering where that store went, I thought it shut down. I wonder how long till we get some national retailers downtown, not that they're better but it'll still lend downtown some "credibility".
It's just nice to start having things that are entertainment besides nightlife.

that's interesting. Amidst all the talk of restaurants and apartments downtown, I forgot about stuff like this.

I always thought there should have been some class in highschool about doing your taxes/making a checking account/paying bills. Mainly just smart money handling habits

I really don't even think it needs to connect to the mail. Just have a connection that stays on the willow grove side of the tracks and is only a back entrance to willow grove
-
Oh well in that case screw those McMansion owners at a Willow Grove. Heck, let's bulldoze their homes and make it a park while we are at it.
This is such a pointless discussion. There's nothing wrong with Willow Grove. Blaming it for BR's woes is laughable.
Maybe building single entance subdivisions 15 or 20 years ago in the area would have been excusable because "hey... nothing's really out here right" but there really isn't an excuse now knowing that this area is just going to get more populated as it becomes a desirable place to live. (To quote you on the 4-500k home mark, people wouldn't pay that if it wasn't desirable) This is really nothing new of BR, it's the "let the future generations deal with it" type of planning and if you don't see why that's a problem then you're actually a part of the problem
They live in nice houses and are therefore guilty so who cares.
That's the vibe I get.
This thread has moved from that to "all neighborhoods are bad if you can't drive thru it in order to get to a shopping center".
I will give you one compliment though. You have mastered the art of the straw man.- 1

No it's not.
just curious, do you think it's an example of good urban planning?

I guess only time will tell but this wouldn't be the first time the EBR neglected to make any positive changes to the school system.
-
I'm worried that if this effectively kills the St. George incorporation that BR will think that their school troubles were solved and they will stay mediocre. Hopefully this at least gets eyes open.

At least let the buildings have some sort of LED lighting.
I don't know what the consensus here is on LED lighting but I feel like it does a lot to accent a skyline (when done correctly)

I personally know people who bike to work and these people have jobs that require college degrees so pretty far from serving coffee. the reason it doesn't happen more frequently is because there's a lack of infrastructure for cyclists.

It's a shame that the hours are those typical downtown business hours.

LOL No, I spent time there as a kid, taking pictures, hanging out.
Almost seems like a tradition. I did the same thing when I was in highschool.

I wonder which P+W office is taking this one. I was lucky enough to spend some time in the Dallas office. They do some good work.
-
Even if the view to the church was a focal point, it was already ruined by the main street apartments.
-
That's what I meant. I hope there are less distracted drivers in Baton Rouge. :-/
Not much use hoping for that.
-
Big understatement. He's a jerk.
you know, you're not the first person I've heard that from.

Has anyone else seen the new G. Gordon billboard on I10?
-
It's invisible since it blends in. I'm sure we can come up with something both cheap and more creative than painting it though.
We could be missing out on something cool... a giant gas lantern, moon light tower, or the world's tallest playground slide. Spanish town can put a giant pink condom on it for their parade. It could also be something practical like a zombie watch tower. Surely Baton Rouge doesn't take itself too seriously to miss out on this opportunity to create the world's largest Pez dispenser.
We can do so much more with it than just paint it. What would put a smile on your face every time you saw it?
I'd like to see some sort of beacon and something that could be seen at night. I think it would be nice to have a landmark like that when you cross over the bridge.
-
Ha ha...Would just be curious to see how a lil little color variety looked ...instead the pale/blinding/white water tower that is the exact same color as the pale/blinding/white Hilton Capitol House & Hotel Indigo next to each other(not shown just to the left of pic)
I agree it's pretty bland.

Does Baton Rouge really need another phallic symbol? All roads already point to Huey's big huge......Capitol building.
Gotta keep the tradition alive.
But in all honesty, I think with it being so close to the giant concrete "building" it wouldn't be really in your face. It's already there and already is a phallic symbol it's just overpowered by the other 34 story one. I don't know if painting it read would make much of a difference.

Had to search around for a bit but here's one of this ads. I believe there's another one that says the Texas Hammer but this ones equally as tacky.
-
Reminds me of the "Texas Hammer" building in Houston.
-
Not true. The fact you believe that tells me you haven't lived outside of Louisiana.
That was just my observation. Maybe I haven't been in the right places.

Yes, I've played casually and I enjoy it. A lot more options than SC4 (I still love SC4, that's not a jab) I can't say I've played the new Sim City though, heard people weren't into it.
