^^Same. Except I'm a white man. But as a native of the region I despair that there are not more CM-type places around town that unite people beyond what is "classy" for a certain demographic... if that makes sense. It gets people out of their comfort zone while appealing to what's really "common" about everyone, and that's the key. Every neighborhood and small town could use something with the heart that CM brings.

At least CM will be moving to another spot that will benefit from the culture it fosters. Oakhurst is outside the expensive trending neighborhoods, and I'm sure CM will cultivate its own true sense of place in that area. I'm excited.

Regarding people not showing up, it's true. I didn't show up.

" beyond what is "classy" for a certain demographic... if that makes sense. "

Yes! This does make sense. My wife and I experience this quite often in SouthEnd. We would walk into say OMB, TripleC, Owens, Tyber and especially Sycamore and would be greeted with blank stares. Almost as if, why are you two here? It would be different if people looked and gave a warm smile, but this has not been the case.

We are somewhat used to it now and still return to those places because while the establishment its self-has been warm and welcoming to us, sometimes the patrons are not. However, to other minorities, this type of reaction could be very off-putting and they may never return. I guess I kinda get it, me being Black I only represent 1 of 13% of the country, my wife being Asian only represents 1 of 4% of the US population. But we never received the blank or unwelcoming stares at CM. Hopefully, other locations in SouthEnd can cultivate the same type of inclusive culture as CM.

Nailed it.  I loved the diversity of that place, my wife and I took her parents to CM to hang out in that "ashtray" when they came in from Texas and they couldn't stop raving about how cool they thought it was.  It was featured during the DNC as part of our "Third Spaces" concept.  As nonillogical says, it's a truly Charlotte concept.  I'd rather have ten more of them than what's going there.

Thank you so much for posting this. As an African American, I don't find many places in SouthEnd that has a really diverse group of people eating, drinking and enjoying the day like I did at CM. My wife (Chinese), and I love hanging out at breweries and soaking up everything SouthEnd has to offer. At one point we went to Owens Bagels every Saturday for breakfast then head to Craft for some day drinking. Typically, most of the places in SouthEnd are predominately White and my wife and I would be the only minorities there.

This was not the case at CM as there was always a diverse group of people there. A bunch of friends and I went to CM on their last Saturday and had drinks almost the entire day there. We are really going to miss that place and I hope other locations in SouthEnd can draw more diverse crowds like CM.

  3. Is there anybody on this thread with kids that lived away from SouthEnd and then moved to SouthEnd? My wife and I lived in SouthEnd for two years and absolutley love that area. We Currently live in the FortMill area but visit SouthEnd almost every weekend. We were renting in Silos SouthEnd previously but wanted more space for less. We have a beautiful 2800sqft home in the FortMill area and pay less in mortgage than we did for rent at Silos.

We realize if we move back to SouthEnd we would get a lot less space and pay more for motgage but the livelyness and active lifestyle of SouthEnd we miss. Our situation won't always include us since we plan to have a family. I heard the schools zoned for SouthEnd arent the best. I wondered if there are any current parents on this thread that live in SouthEnd and how do you feel about the space constraints and schools in the area. Any information would be much aprpeciated.

Plus, I hate that its hard to find new HOUSE construction in the area. There are new condos and townhomes but not really new stand alone homes.

YES IT WOULD HAVE BEEN :-( instead we got what we got.

    Condos, Retail, Rentals, Office, everything.

wow.................. That would of been very nice. We just moved out of Silos and loved living there. SouthEnd really doesn't have much to purchase along the light rail. Tonsssssssssssssssss of rentals but not much to purchase. More options to purchase would of been really great.

  5. I still have about 8 of those along with a dozen or so Silos koozies. I worked for the developer and yes that project was going to be really cool. I was quickly taking reservations for the condos at the Silos and it was clear we were going to have half under contract in no time. Not sure if this board ever caught wind of it but the 22 story residential high rise that was a part of phase 2 of the Silos would have been something else.

Silos originally was supposed to be condos instead of rental apartments?

  6. It looks like Marsh properties is moving forward with "Phase 2" of Park and Kingston.  They are looking at adding a small building at the corner of Park and St Tryon to replace the white house there that was previously a boarding home.  The additional building is only supposed to be 15 units, which is cool.  Hopefully it will be architecturally distinct from the rest of the project.

So that's what that white house was. Do you happen to know what that other white house is used for, the one behind Saucemans? On the corner of stryon/west blvd. I noticed there was always a group of guys in the driveway. Now I see that area has been cleaned up and there are no trespassing signs.

However before the signs, there would be 5-6guys there hanging early in the morning by a fire.

  7. There are some affordable single family homes around New Bern Station, although that doesn't exactly keep you in the heart of South End. If you're a little more adventurous and willing to wait a little bit longer for the extreme renovations/teardown/new constructions to start happening, homes around Scaleybark are even cheaper. Of course that puts you even further away from the heart of South End.

    Thx!

  8. I haven't seen any movement at the Publix site since they excavated the underground parking, which was easily a month ago. Anyone have an idea what's going on there? The apartment project next door is plugging along at a good rate.

I've noticed the same. In fact, I even walk by there on Saturday and Sunday nights sometimes. The apartment next door has guys working all week long. They work late Saturday night and even on Sunday night. Each time I've walked by Publix to check on the progress, nobody is there, but the apartment next door always has guys working. It's really odd.

  9. The gates had to be replaced because they were built as single and needed to be double.  The single gate was too heavy and caused the operators to fail.

The gates have been up an operational since 12/6/13.  Also, the break in happened because a car with the criminals followed a resident in.  This can happen at every single apartment complex in Charlotte.

So the situation there isn't a dire as those few residents make it out to be?

  10.

Yeah, I will say the parking situation at WOB is beyond stupid.

Do we really need to have a great parking situation for a beer hall in South End and at the light rail?!?

I agree with "Whistle-Stop". The parking situation is pretty stupid. The novelty of a beer only place will wear off quickly for southend residents since it's readily available. Their primary crowd will be those that can't get it to so easily and would need adequate parking.

  11.

just did a quick google for "The Fountains and car breakins". Found them on apartmentratings.com. It seems the car breakins are true. The Fountains removed the back gate, which allows access to anybody. Guests do no have parking on site. Somebody was robbed a gun point. The biggest thing that stood out to me is residents having their cars towed by the front office. Each post other residents have commented as well.

Seems like theres a HUGE mess at The Fountains.

  12. New UP poster here so take it easy on me.  I'm moving to Charlotte in the next couple months and want to be close to Uptown so I took two days to tour SouthEnd Apartments and the area in general.

From initially hitting South Blvd from 277 there is a really great active feel, plenty of apartments, bars, restaurants, ect.  I felt as though I was still apart of Uptown Charlotte.  The Apartments from Camden, to Mosaic and Ashton gave a feel of being safe and relatively close to where the action is.  Rents are a tad high, but that is to be expected.  Ashton was actually about 20 percent higher than any other in the area and they currently have no openings, at least no 2 bedrooms.  Every single apartment I visited in this area made it a point to tout proximity to the light rail and the coming Publix.  As a way of comparison a couple of them touted safety compared to some of the newer developments further down South Blvd, they specifically mentioned problems at Fountains when I said I was going to visit there too.

Once you pass Ashton though, and this is just my opinion, the area doesn't feel as apart of Uptown as it could.  I think the Publix will help, but some of  the buildings in the area are in need of serious renovation /updating.  Sedgefield shopping center across from Colonial and Silos just looks very out of date in comparison to what the apartments there are trying to portray.  Fountains from everything I have heard is having serious issues with car breakins and even a couple muggings, and while the apartments are nice, the area surrounding it needs some serious work to compete.  Other notes:

    - Silos and Colonial seem to be renting out well.  Colonial opens it's second phase very soon with the Apartments with uptown views available first week in March.

    - Don't know if the people at Colonial know something or not, but was told that Sedgefield Shopping Center was going to be upgraded or torn down within a year.

    - Was also told that something was going to be done with the parking lot where Pepsi parks their trucks at the corner of Poindexter and South.

    - Really like the look and feel of Park & Kingston, but they only have studio's and one bedrooms.

I'm definitely moving to the SouthEnd area soon and love reading the updates here.  Keep them coming!

wow. I was planning to move into The Fountains but choose Silos instead. Really really loving Silos a lot. Where did you hear about the car breakins? That sounds horrible.

  13. Over the last week, I've driven down Remount past all the new apartment construction and noticed that the 3 Silos are lit up various colors at night (looks to be from the ground level pointing up -- red, blue, green, etc)... Anyone see this? Is this to be a permanent fixture? It actually looks pretty cool.

yes they are permanent and they change colors randomly as well.

Seen it and yes, to my understanding it is permanent.  They also finally filled the pool at Silos.  And I'm PRETTY DANG SURE THEY'VE GOT A BOCCIE BALL COURT!  lucky.

yep that sure is a bocce ball court. waiting for them to actually open up the pool area. it is still closed for now.
