More than Wisconsin/UP Packers transplant fan?

It’s honestly equaled out pretty quickly over the last few years, just yesterday I had a group of 15 bears fans from the Chicago area who’ve all moved here over the last 3 years doing a fantasy draft.

I do think there are a lot of Chicago transplants in Michigan (in fact, 75% of the people I meet that move here come from Chicago (even if they originally lived elsewhere). A little taste of home? I say we build a high speed connection to Chicago and become part of the Chicagoland area. :)

As someone who runs a sports bar, there is an awfully lot of Bears fans around lately! 🤢

I was torn on posting  on this thread or the "downtown exodus" thread, but there is an application in with the city to open a bar/restaurant in at 59 Commerce Ave, which I believe is this space directly adjacent to Stellas. Would be cool to see that block fill in!

Last I knew that location was still owned by Project Barfly, it’s where Mark Sellars originally wanted to open the Shrunken Head back in 2015. When I left the company in 2017 it was being used for storage and maintenance for the rest of Barfly. Curious to see if when Sellars sold Barfly that parcel was part of the sale.

  4. This is incredibly frustrating, I thought this project was great for the neighborhood. The need for housing in GR currently is unreal as we all know. I was also excited to see a building that no longer fits the fabric on the neighborhood become a thing of the past. I imagine this will sit for a long time to come. Huge bummer.

Joe,  watch 701 Wealthy (ex: Royals) for some movement pretty quickly here -- as of today have a Lease in place with Good Truckin' Cafe, an established 6-store operator (started as a food truck, now a series of small restaurants).    These guys have something of a cult following elsewhere in the state and an awesome, small-town diner vibe with some really amazing food and a huge reputation.

They're not likely to open until maybe June --- this is a perfect use for this space, and fits well with the eclectic local vibe in this block-- couldn't be more excited to have this one teed up.

Mark Ansara (Advantage CRE) brought the building to us, then went and found the tenant, and ...wham !    Here we go.      What's next ?

Where can we fit a smoothie shop in this neighborhood ?  I feel like we need a smoothie shop.

Just a couple places that pop into my head for a good place for a smoothie bar are the old Rak Thai spot at Diamond / Wealthy and where The Plant Parlor just vacated on Calkins / Wealthy next to 40 Acres. I would LOVE to have a smoothie bar anywhere on wealthy though tbh. Excited for the diner! That’s great news.

I was looking back through old posts to try and find the plans someone on UP had showed years ago for the development on Wealthy and found this. Pretty amazing to see the changes since 2007. Thought everyone might enjoy seeing this so bumping this thread. :)

Thank you for that trip down memory lane, I spent an hour today reading back through the thread. It was especially a blast from the past reading links and comments regarding where I live now!

How many decades has that building been closed off to the street?    I remember what  that strip of wealthy was like late 80s/early 90s.  Neighborhood was so bad McDonalds abandoned it.  Crazy to think how different things are.

The first house I rented in the mid 00’s was on Calkins and I always remembered walking by that abandoned McDonanlds. Now, almost 18 years later I live in a building on the lot where that McDonalds used to be.

Wow harsh. I think they did their best to keep it going (and the patio may have been a hail mary and probably came back way more expensive than they planned), but there's a lot of competition on Bridge now from when they opened. Competition for customers and staff.  And frankly it's way too big for a restaurant/pub. You want a place to feel full, and you also WANT to have a wait on busy nights (as it makes it seem popular). They had neither a full house nor a wait the last couple of times we went. They even got rid of a lot of the german stuff on the menu.

Even Nickerbocker/New Holland reduced their restaurant footprint.

Whoever buys this should divide the place up into separate businesses.

What part of the building did new New Holland eliminate?

that's surprisingly close to their Centerpointe location.  Seems like they are typically very far apart.  Great location for them though.

I was leaving Centerpointe around 5:30 last night and the line for that Chick Fil A was absolutely insane. Speaking of that, the old toys r us is just a pile of rubble now.

I’m confused. Is Broadlesf taking over Sovengard’s space or is Drip Drop? Or are they each taking a floor (which would be really great)?

Drip Drop sounds like a pretty cool concept:

I’m also confused, I was talking with a friend who works for Broad Leaf just last week and he was talking about them opening on Bridge St but this is the first I’m hearing about this place. Does sound cool though!

  11. This is outside of Z’s tonight, I personally GM a bar / restaurant downtown and I can’t put it into better perspective than this of how much we need our establishments staffed. Covid 100% ruined nightlife in Grand Rapids, this is proof of it, everyone in this line with me are out of town people here for a convention. This city is 100% embarrassing itself, it’s Tuesday night, not Friday.

  12. Per WZZM; “The few events and facility use over that time were, for the most part, done without any expectation of rent and was done as part of our civic obligation to give back to our community during a difficult time.”

Thats a really unique way for Joel Langlois to talk about all of the grifting he let happen while obviously not getting paid, not sad to see this place go at all.
