  1. He's from Grand Haven. He was an AHL coach for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team until a little over halfway through the season, when the Penguins fired Therrien and called him up. Honestly, I think he has a pretty promising coaching career.

You can check out his life story is in Wikipedia.

fwiw, Dan Bylsma has two brothers who still live and work in the area: Jon is a litigation attorney and partner at Varnum, and Greg is CFO at Herman Miller

  2. Former Griffins have been making a real splash in the 2009 NHL playoffs... A fact that hasn't been lost on ESPN.com. This article notes how utilizing the Griffins has worked well for the Red Wings:

Detroit Red Wings Can Pick 'Em, But They Can Also Develop 'Em - ESPN

Another article, this one from the Wall Street Journal, which actually does mention the Griffins a few times:

  3. You don't need Forbes to tell you the job market is depressed in Grand Rapids. However, we don't put a lot of stock in these Fortune/Forbes rankings here, good or bad. Their methodology is usually pretty suspect. What I'm hearing is that for people whose job it is to bring people to Grand Rapids for work, these potential transferees are no longer concerned about the job market here (because things are bad all over).

Here's an interesting animation for job growth/losses in the U.S.:

The UP Community may not put much stock in these rankings and you're not wrong in saying the methodology is sometimes suspect, but that doesn't mean Joe Public disregards them. Regardless of how the lists are compiled, it is certainly better to make the ones that are considered good/positive and it's best to remain off the rankings that are bad/negative.

  4. Anyone else thinking of canceling their GR Press subscription because the paper seems to be about half as thick and our most recent bill said that the price is going up? If you're going to take both of those actions, don't you think you'd space them out so your customers don't feel like their getting completely ripped off?

Yes, I am. I think combined, my wife and I now only spend 10 minutes browsing the paper each evening. I may actually read only 2-3 articles in their entirety. The rest of it, I just skim. The majority of it seems to be wire reports or day(s)-old opinion pieces from the NY Times, Washington Post, or Wall St. Journal. It's old news by the time it appears in the Press. IMO, the paper version of the Press is no longer worth the money, especially when it's available online (I prefer to read a hard copy versus web version, but only if I spend a fair amount of time actually reading the articles).

  5. GRR has got a long way to go on getting fares down. I'm pricing out a 5 or 6 day family vacation for mid-April on Expedia and Travelocity, comparing flying from Grand Rapids to Orlando and Detroit to Orlando. The hotel/flight package price differences are about $500 apart (GRR higher). Expedia and Travelocity must not have deals with Allegiant Air, so they did not come up as an option.

I then went to Allegiant Air's site and priced out the flight. Even though they advertise $89 one way, that pricing is very limited. It actually works out to about $400/person round trip if your stay in Orlando is more than 2 or 3 days. That's more than the Travelocity Price when you do a package hotel/flight deal.

Long term parking at Detroit is $28/day. Anyone know any cheaper alternatives in the DTW vicinity?

Two one-way car rentals might be cheaper than parking for a week in Detroit.

  6. I see Air Canada is running an ad on the Press' website now, listing their fares:

Oops. It was there the first few rotates, but now it's gone.

Took a round trip Air Canada flight from GRR to the Maritimes area of Canada this week. As expected, the BEH aircraft being used is very tiny (18-seater). On the way to Toronto on Wednesday, 8 of the 18 seats were filled. On return flight this morning, only 5 were on the plane (not including pilots). The flight attendant is the co-pilot and he/she only makes an appearance at the start of the flight and at the end. Because the plane is so small, I was expecting a much bumpier ride. Overall not a bad experience and considering my other options included 2 or more connections, the Air Canada flight with only 1 connection was perfect.

(I did notice a few Steelcase people on the flight to Toronto. With a production facility in Ontario, having direct service to Toronto is probably nice for them)

  7. How did you catch that?

I saw an article earlier about Capital City Airport volume at a 20 year low, and now I can't find it. I would say with Allegient moving their operations here, there's a better chance they're here for the long term (no matter what NWA does). Does anyone even see Northwest trying to undercut them with the financial upheaval in the markets lately?

Ah, here it is (buried in the article):

    http://www.wzzm13.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=87294

Since Allegiant will only fly to two Florida cities from GRR, they're hardly going to be a threat to NWA or any other legacy carrier in our market. Maybe NWA will try to compete on fares for flights going to/from Orlando and Tampa, but that's it. Allegiant certainly isn't going to impact the cost of flights from GRR to New York, Boston, Washington, LA, etc.

  8. [im confused to why this ramp has to be so large also :dontknow: Most people are going to Lansing, Chicago, Detroit anyways. It looks to me like they are spending just for a wow factor. There is no reason for a ramp this size for an airport this size.

Have you driven by the parking lots surrounding the airport recently? Those flat lots are huge and consistently 75% - 90% full. Add to that the much needed expansion of a rental car area (to also be housed in this new garage) and I think you'll be surprised that this garage is probably needed. Sure there is some leakage to other area airports (budget travelers who have extra time), but I think it's safe to say that "most" fliers in the area still use GRR. I think you're seriously underestimating how many business travelers we have in Grand Rapids / West Michigan who usually won't take the time to drive to one of the other area airports. For them (me included) it's more about convenience than cost.

  9. Rumors are swirling on the internet that McCain might name his VP running mate in Grand Rapids on or around Aug. 30th or 31st. Apparently McCain has informally scheduled a visit to GR around that date, and Secret Service has booked rooms at the J.W. Marriott around that date. The timing might be due to the DNC convention coming up next weekend, and the amount of Press Michigan will receive at it due to the Primaries.

That would be quite interesting after Obama got a major endorsement from Edwards here in GR.

It sounds like this decision will be announced on Friday in Dayton, unfortunately not in Grand Rapids this weekend. Doing this in Ohio makes as much sense as doing it here since both states have a high number of electoral votes and both have polls showing these states are still a toss-up. (Obama up slightly in Mich, McCain up slightly in Ohio)

I'll be utilizing Air Canada service out of GRR later this year when I have to go to both Toronto and St. John, New Brunswick for work. Unfortunately the planes (18-seat Beechcrafts) being used to and from here are about the size of a crop duster. I think they hand you a parachute pack when you board the plane. :shok:

And speaking of the new parking ramp, on a flight home yesterday, I heard several visitors commenting on the construction as we were taxing to the gate. The conversation centered around why such a large ramp was needed for such a small airport.

  11. I think I have about 10 trouble tickets in with AT&T right now for customer T1 circuits being down. Many areas are still without power. The batteries in many of AT&T's remote terminals started failing this morning, too.

So far, I haven't heard of any injuries, so that's great news. Hopefully it will be nice weather for everyone on the long weekend...

A guy I know was injured when a large tree limb fell on him at his house in the Grand Haven area. He's in serious condition at North Ottawa Community Hospital. Story

  12. FYI - There are Christians, who are Republicans, and are against taxes on everything that are for this project. Me being one of them. Can we please leave religion and personal politics out of this? I'm not trying to start something and I don't want an argument. I just want to ensure that the discussion is enjoyable for everyone. Thanks.

Anyway...why have none of the major news medias picked this up? :dontknow:

Agreed. A post like that has no place on this forum.

  13. So much is going on this weekend in Uptown! The free Trolley rides around the Uptown shopping districts starts on Saturday from 10am-3pm. Wealthy Street Spring Fling, Farmer's Market, Heritage Hill garage sales, and more.....

A wonderful weekend to spend in the neighborhood! TripleG

Was the trolley not running today? Hung around the East Hills business district from about 10:30 - 11:30 today with the kids and never saw it. My 3-year old was quite disappointed.

  14. Although smaller than most, Grand Rapids is definitely one of the nicer airports out there. I fly several times a month and spend too much time in airports all over the country. If you think GRR is bad, try flying into Washington-National, NY-LaGuardia, Boston-Logan, along with a whole host of other airports that are downright awful. Sure there isn't a lot to do at GRR, but due to the size there really isn't a need for much more than what we already have.

And the Eames plywood seating and Eames Airport seating that we have throughout the airport is hardly a cheap solution - you'd be hard pressed to find a more expensive line of seating to put into an airport. Unfortunately the designers made a bad choice by selecting that puky yellow color for the leather. The light color shows a lot of dirt and grime, which makes it look much older than it really is.

  15. For those of you who read Sports Illustrated, check out the "Civic Pride" letter to the editor in this weeks edition. Former Mayor John Logie obviously took exception to some disparaging comments made about Grand Rapids in a recent Floyd Mayweather article (12/17 SI). The writer referred to Mayweather's home of Grand Rapids as a "flagging Michigan city." Logie's letter defending GR was published in this week's edition of SI. No linky since it doesn't look like letters to the editor are published on SI.com

  16. Edward Jones is the "Nail Salon" of semi-affluent business districts. :)

I'm sorta kidding, but it seems they crop up everywhere.

Edward Jones philosophy is to be more Main St. than Wall St - their strategy is to put multiple offices with only one investment representative in each office throughout an area instead of having a large office with multiple brokers in one regional location, ala a Merrill Lynch or Smith Barney. That's the reason they seem to crop up everywhere. I think I'd consider the East Hills area to be like a "Main Street."

  17. Hey GR Dad . . . .Is Urban Planet down a lot? I can only get on to this site very sporadically. Many times when I type the web address and hit "enter" my screen will go completely blank. Maybe its an issue on my end? thx

This is is an issue with our company's network. I have the same problem when trying to access this site from our place of employment. Sometimes I get in, sometimes I don't. I never have the issue when accessing Urban Planet from home.

  18. Otis Nelson is on the loose, man this is going to be a massive man hunt...

I was one Michigan near College and there's crazy stuff going on... Cops everywhere on the beats and in helicopters, everywhere.

There are helicopters buzzing homes in the Fulton Heights area searching for this guy and Duthler Family Foods (intersection of Fuller and Michigan) was just evacuated. Supposedely the police are searching cars going through the Michigan/Fuller intersection. They must have a pretty good idea as to where he is
