^What about that Lyon Square development?
'pomegranate studios' now has a very simple web presence including an email address.
The event is about strange red fruit?

And he would never stoop to playing the crowd, would he?
"No city rocks like Grand Rapids rocks! Whooo! I love you all!"
No one ever does that. Ever.

I do not think you understood what Dave said. Is that in Grand Rapids we treat each other with a lot of respect and expect it at the same time. You go outside and he feels its not as good as in Grand Rapids.
He's Dave effing Ramsey, people here in GR have such a man crush on the guy that he gets treated very well when he's here. There are times when Dave Ramsey has come up in conversation and I thought I was hearing about the person's prom date or something.

The Japaneses privatized their railroads, and look at their success. All we are looking to do is nationalize everything. Yes, their government funds for more railroad construction, but with yearly profits at 2 billion dollars and annual ridership steadily increasing, these companies could afford to do it on their own. But given their small country vs. ours, planes and automobiles are currently the best solution for America. Meanwhile, lets privatize Amtrak.
Amtrak was a conglomeration of private railroads who were in such dire straits, they make the GM situation look benign. I don't think you can privatize passenger rail anymore in this country, doing so would just bury the train deeper into obscurity even now with fuel uncertainty at an all time high.
What is needed is investment in high speed trains. Right now we still chug along at half the speed of European and Japanese passenger rail. Building an infrastructure for 200 mph+ trains would drastically impact their ridership. Heck if I could get on a train in downtown GR that got me to chicago in a third of the time it took by car, and paying similar to the cost of fuel to do it, Trains would skyrocket in popularity.

Sometimes you do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponzi_scheme#Bernard_Madoff
That deserves an Oh SNAP!
The house had a full copper roof. From the looks of the picture, it wasn't being salvaged. I've done business with the contractor demoing houses and normally they don't salvage anything. Crunch and munch and off to the landfill by the truckload. I know the family has done a lot for West Mi and GR but sometimes they just flaunt their wealth. There is no humbleness or "commoner" in their actions. Compare to Fred and Lena Meijer who used walk around in their stores to pass out ice cream coupons to the Purple CowI suppose this is expected of them it seems. Perhaps when we start mining landfills for precious metals the copper will finally get used.

Michigan is looking more and more like it'll have it's own little Kansas City/St. Louis thing going on in a few years if those commentators are right.

on what building was the old weather ball on? and dont tell me the name of it, cause i dont know the names of the buildings in this city yet.
-
Hard to tell. I'm guessing in the 40's?
Ryerson is there. Just to the right of the Y.
This is another interesting old aerial, right at the crescent of urban renewal in the 60's:

That was a pretty nice building in the "diamond" of Louis, Ionia, and Fulton.

Can anyone give me more info on this circled area?
Is it a old cemetary?

Thank you for the bump also.
Were the racial divisions added when the map was made, or did someone go in and write them on the map?
While I understand it's an old map, having those distinctions on there is really awkward now.

That WAS the Commercial Printing building which Secchia tore down.
Thanks! for some reason my head was drawing a blank.
That really stinks.

Anyone know whats going on at the corner of Oakes and Market? Last week it was a giant hole surrounded by a fence, now it's filled with sand, surrounded by a giant fence

What's on everyone's Thanksgiving menu? I think I will make salmon on the grill in cedar paper. Then the usual sides. Free range turkey for those who partake, and topping it all off with pumkin pie.
My family will be smoking a turkey, and serving it with all the usual sides; twice baked mashed potatoes, sausage filled stuffing, home made turkey gravy made with the drippings, (Apple smoked turkey gravy? omgs, so good!), and all kinds of good stuff.
Typical just outside the suburbs style cooking

Sorry, but I think the weird babies on the other make it the creepier of the two.
Its the left for dead construction workers in the Pyongyang (sic) tower that make it creepy

Too cool not to share: Creepy tower: http://deputy-dog.com/2008/07/17/ever-seen-a-creepier-tower/

___________________________________________________________
Good news for Grand Rapids. GR Ford is back to truly being an international airport. Booya!

Although this is awesome news, and I await the day non stops to Montreal come!

Saw a poll on this the other day at WOOD about willingness to use mass transit, and these were the results:
Are you willing to use mass transit and conserve more to lower your energy usage and cost?
Yes, I am: 21.3%
No, I'm not: 37.2%
I'm willing, just haven't done it: 21.3%
Not yet, anyway: 20.2%
So basically it boils down to
Yes: 42.6%
No: 57.4%
There's a lot of work to be done yet.

Kent County GOP headquarters broken into..
Thousands of "Republican for Obama" bumper stickers reportedly missing. More at 11:00.
What is the KCRC doing with "Republicans for Obama" bumper stickers anyway, sounds like it was an "inside job" (Meaning its probably a group of Republicans angry with the stickers in the KCRC offices)
on another topic:
This one is probably right up Veloise's alley, but does anyone know of a good bicycle shop on the NW side?

as cool as it is to see Mayor Heartwell in a promotional video.. I have to say that his on-screen presence is a little weak... oh well
That jacket certainly didn't help.
-
Ughhh...this isn't exactly the kinda press I thought we'd get after last night. And I don't know what he's smokin' either.....GR is NOT the epicenter of the imploding economy...we may be caught on the edges, but... And where the heck did he find 80-90% abandon homes as he seems to imply?
I'd be more concerned about the comments of "Geoff" then the foreclosure stats., and I didn't see anything about a 80-90% abandon rate in GR, only on Broadway Ave. (which probably IS correct.)

I believe they are moving to a new location at 28th and Madison. I haven't been by there lately so I'm not sure if that building is done and opened or not.
Grand Opening at the new store was yesterday.

Anyone else find the actions of the US Sportsman's Alliance to be completely out of line with this case?
Meijer was going to do a good deed, by sponsoring the Humane society, and the USSA raises enough of a fit to quash the whole thing. Makes me sick.
-
Seriously... is our society so on-demand that we can't wait *gasp* 5 minutes for food to be prepared to given to us? Thats blasphemy!
When it's 5 minutes spent in an idling car, then yes. The most innefficient things in the world are Drive thru lanes.
-
Exactly.
For those complaining about the added delay, ask yourselves this: Do I mind 60 more days of weeds or 3 - 5 years ofparking lot?
I just get the feeling it will be 3-5 years of more weeds.
I'll give Sam a lot of credit, he's done very well with rehabbing and restoring old buildings in GR. But getting something new off the ground isn't his strong suit. I wouldn't be shocked at all if this lot eventually gets sold to one of the Big Five (DeVos, VanAndel, Meijer, Secchia, Frey/Wege) Or is used for the city's benefit.
If this lot doesn't get developed, maybe the city should look into using it for it's own needs. It would be a great spot for a new City Hall, or even a PAC.
Van Andel Arena Expansion?
