It definitely would be nice, especially for the Cabarrus area. I really do feel that by now the Charlotte area has shown it has the skill set to support an auto manufacturing operations here. Unfortunately I don't think that we will be receiving an auto plant here. Toyota would have been good but it looks like we snubbed on that one.

I wish Waverly was in SouthPark. That'd be a great addition. You must have seen the Whole Foods Anchor and assumed it was talking about SP.

I do find the comments intereting as well. I wonder why is 285feet too high? Does it obstruct airplane flights or some thing? I think the height should allow for a few more rooms. Especially considering one goal would be the Super Bowl the more rooms the better. I know we still need some additional upgrades to BoA stadium. I hope this project does take off. The building may add some character to the Sugar Creek Greenway.

The Olde Towne Apartments behind Sharon Corners Shopping Center are planned to be demolished to make room for a 300-room Dual Brand hotel. If the rezoning is approved, they hope to start construction in early 2015 with completion in early 2016.
I'm assuming that project is different than this one.

Yes but 6100 and 6000 fairview are ALL OFFICE. Which has a much much higher floor height than parking.
Because of it will probably be about 20-30 feet shorter.
If this project is not the tallest it will definitely still be up there. It looks Southpark is becoming Bankheadish. Not quite there but there are several projects that are very much spread out rather than clustered or linear.

So 15 Stories on what seems to be Mall property? I like the idea of them using up the extra space on the mall property.
Also, what is currently the tallest building in SouthPark?
The Fairview towers on 6000 and 6100 Fair new road. I'm looking forward to the updates on Southpark. I've always felt that this area is truly Charlottes second market.

I really like the design. It looks like the uptown boom is back, perhaps. I hope that more of the surface lots get filled with development. I remember seeing in Atlanta I think, a rather interesting looking parking garage.

I've heard other people talk about the lack of appearance of this hotel. I find it interesting that more hotels are being built in Charlotte. Perhaps a ploy to land some bigger events? Hmmm...

I hope this project gets built. I agree with others who say this will truly make Midtown the midtown of Charlotte.

Pretty excited about this project this project. Hopefully this means that the uptown market is back and we'll see more skyscrapers in Charlotte.

I'm actually kind of excited about the court house construction especially considering that it will look better than Atlanta's. However, I wonder in today's political economy I'm nervous about whether or not it will be constructed.

I'm not sure how much local impact this will have (perhaps someone like atlrvr can provide better insight), but three of the nation's largest banks: BofA, Wells Fargo and JP Morgan are entering into a Joint Venture called "clearXChange". This is a payment service similar to Paypal, for mobile devices. It will compete directly with Google's service and Paypal. The JV will be based in Charlotte.
Well, if it turns out to be a success then this will be great for Charlotte.

The only city in California that was is worth mentioning that existed before the automobile was the San Francisco. I would personally put Charlotte up against any city in New York except NYC. Too many on this board have no concept of Charlotte before 1970. Downtown thrieved and walking from Five Points to Elizabeth or Fourth Ward to Southend wasn't anything unusual. Cities outside of the sunbelt have not had growth patterns like the south. Unfortunately, most of the south is newly build due to growth patterns. People move to this area to have big yards for their children to play and to have Bar-B-Ques and enjoy the outside. The age of cohesive ethnic ghettoes of northeastern citiesfor which many elude has gone away. Corner stores in the city are not feasible now with the cost of land, etc. We do have some really nice neighborhoods that are trying to bring patterns back as they were in the good old days and that is great. But, Charlotte was once a thrieving city for its size with the trolly cars, pedestrians, and all of the things for which so many are aware.
Many of my friends in London would move here in a hearts beat if they could. They often visit and love the area. They have no problems finding wonderful parks to walk or run, and excellent shopping. The corner shop and small cafe in London is also dying due to costs, etc. I would love to have the corner shop and mom and pop businesses, but that is a thing of the past in most cases.
Added to your neighborhoods of NoDa and Belmont, I would like to add Fourth Ward where my mom grew up, Elizabeth, Southend, Dilworth, Davidson (the town), Cornelius, Baxter, Selwin Village, and downtown Concord to name a few more.
This is so true! I thought I was the only one who realized this. When you look at photos of Charlotte from the the 1950s and 1960s it is highly pedestrian friendly, walkable neighborhoods, and DT retail. I recommend everyone to go the Levine Museum of the New South and look at the permanent exhibit "Cottonfields to Skyscrapers" and see the growth of Charlotte. It is truly inspiring and amazing to see the transformation of Charlotte. I wish that some of the gentrification did not mess up great neighborhoods such as Brooklyn and 2nd Ward High School.

The Urban Area number is from the 2000 census, during which Charlotte was only 540,828. So Charlotte city was 71% of the Urban Area.
The US Census has redfined their definition for UA. Under this new definition Charlotte, Gastonia, Concord, and Rock Hill UAs will be rejoined. The estimates using the 3 year ACS stats puts the population at just over 1.2 million. I will add the link later.
