  1. The Jazz place will be in the old Crossroads/Interludes coffee house under Lime Leaf. I hope this guy knows what he is doing as this looks like a shaky proposition at best to me. I'm not sure Spartans are ready to frequent a jazz club enough to keep it open.

As for the scarcity of folks downtown on Saturday night, I really have no answers at this point. I am sure Wild Wing will boost some traffic around the square like it used to, but I think it will be a lot of young traffic and nothing that will really help Justins or Lime Leaf or even Miyakos. Its possible the new Rockers Brewery will help, but at this point there will be no restaurant, only a tasting room.

Does anyone think a nice ice cream parlor downtown would help generate traffic? You ought to see Brusters at Hillcrest at any time of the day, its amazing. I think an old fashioned ice cream parlor would be a slam dunk!

Does anyone know who the Jazz Club owner or manager will be?

  2. Thanks for the updates!

I've also heard good things about La Taverna.

The Cuban restaurant (not sure what it's called) in the red brick house in Hillcrest is also pretty good from what I hear, and has reasonable prices. The owner is from Cuba and sounds like Rick Ricardo.

I'm glad that despite the recession and everything, Spartanburg is getting a wider variety of restaurants to choose from.

I am a big fan of the Cuban Cafe. I encourage everyone to check it out. It's very nice to have an authentic place like that in town!

    Where exactly is La Taverna?

  3. I think it will be between Spring St. and Daniel Morgan Ave. ( Harris PL.). This would make it 2 short blocks to Morgan Square. I think this would be the first new building in that area in 80 years or so? It will also help Hampton Heights connect to Downtown. It seems like a little of a chance going there, but it may work especially if more buildings are done to help support the area.

I think it would be worth it for the property owner/building owner/leasee/new business/etc to engage the hampton heights neighborhood in that development. Once the businesses that will be there are determined - get the residents in on it the plans at the early stages. They are a very loyal bunch, that wants to see downtown do well and would be willing to really talk up a new business/development and to spend money their themselves.

i hope this comes about. it sounds promising.

  4. Thats great news! I still think that a larger sign that is perpendicular to Church Street would help that Crossroads Coffee location.

This isn't a restaurant, but it's also worth mentioning that C. Edwards Cigars has outdoor seating in the back - it's a courtyard with a nice urban patio feel to it - bordered on all sides by the Palmetto Building apts. YOu can access it from Dunbar Street or from the cigar bar. The bar has wine, beer and bar snacks so it's a perfect place for a warm weather happy hour!

Also - Groucho's has outdoor seating (though not the ideal place to take friends to dinner...)

With that said.... i feel your pain. When I lived in Austin, I think I could count the number of times that I ate INDOORS on one hand....

  5. Who here lives in the city limits? The people within the city seem to fall into two broad categories: 1) in charge, or 2) indifferent.

I do. And I am not in charge or indifferent, but involved.

The best thing that those outside of the city limits could do - is to start their own campaign supporting their area's voluntary annexation into the city (assuming you live somewhere near the metropolitan area). But I don't imagine that happening anytime soon....

I suppose the next best thing is to spend lots and lots of money in city establishments - help keep them alive, which helps make downtown thrive, and adds to the hospitality tax funds, which are reinvested into city growth and downtown revitalization.

  6. What was on it? I'm assuming its something better than American cheese and pre-sliced white bread ;)

let's see.... i think it was provolone and maybe another cheese, but it was REALLY good hearty bread with a roasted tomato spread on it and it was grilled. i highly recommend it.

  7. I tried the Converse Deli out over here on the eastside/downtown area (converse plaza, near talbots, etc). It's promising - i ordered a grilled cheese that was REALLY good. they call it the grown-up grilled cheese. Hope that they can become a fixture.

  8. Welcome to the forum sparkinlady!

Am I really seeing a pedicab??

Is that the farmer's market at Magnolis St Station or is it the one at the rail trail on Henry St?

A pedicab it is.... a local guy owns it and let us take it down to the market on a few saturdays in 2006.

the market pic is from the magnolia street market - taken in 2008.
