  1. We flew back into OEA this morning and it kind of looked like they had applied a very dark orange color the full height of the front reveal. Can anyone confirm that? It also looks like a majority of the structural steel framing for the roof is being erected.

The project looks great. Hats off to everyone at PCL.

Positive words for another GC? Wow, I am amazed!

  2. I thought Virgin or British Airways fly direct to HEathrow from MCO.

Both fly from MCO direct to London Gatwick. I have often had to take this route and then change airports to Heathrow while in London to move on to further destinations, quite annoying. About 5-6 years ago, there was a complimentary shuttle between the two airports (and they would transfer your luggage for you). Now, you have to claim your bags and find your own way between the airports and check in your luggage. Or at least I had to do that last December when I went through.

  3. I am not sure if anyone has posted this anywhere, but there is an interesting and lengthy article about the development and symbolism of Orlando in the March 2007 edition of National Geographic Magazine. I just picked it up today and thought it was a good read.

  4. Article in the Orlando Sentinel discussing early completion of the project amongst other things.

Early? Wasn't the opening originally scheduled for Sept 15, 2006?

  5. JYP is, technically expandable, but I'm thinking they didn't alot for its widening now b/c they don't know what the final buildout of I-4 will look like at that portion, or, in the alternative, Tallahassee and Dist. 5 are a bunch of morons.

they should've made it 8 lanes-- so easy-- then I-4 at 8 lanes would've cut off at the TNPK. morons.

Driving around town, it is apparent that our leaders build for the present rather than the future. I took the 417 from Sanford down to 528 yesterday and it couldnt be more apparent.

If you guys have ever been to any of the Texas cities, you will see what building for the future means. Granted they have lots of open space, but it still takes some ounce of thinking to develop that space into a solid transportation network.

  6. I was watching MNF last night. It was the Raiders at the Vikings. There was a building in Minneapolis that had the same type of crown on the top as the Plaza. It was a singular building that looked like the Bank of America building from Miami with a crown on top like The Plaza. During the daylight shots, I didn't think too much of it. It looked OK, but once the sun went down and they lit up the crown, that thing was magnificent above all the other buildings. I can't wait to see the Plaza lit up at night.

Is that the Target Center? I know which building that is, dont remember the name. The is one of my favorite buildings in the US, looks magnificent especially driving into the city on I35.

  7. Im an idiot. When I posted last night about the floor height, I was thinking for some reason that we were mistakenly calling this a 32 story building, when all along it has been 37. My bad, carry on :)

So then did you mean by your first post that this has 13 more floors to go or that it still has 8 to go and you just thought 28 + 8 = 32?

  8. Actually, the reason was because the building was to be built on zero lot lines on all four sides. It was more about the maximum utilization of space. In order to make it "The Plaza" any curvetures in form had to be located in the center of the project.

I think you missed the point of the previous post...

  9. I like how in the 4th to last picture, the Regions Bank and the Citrus Center peak through in between the Solaire and the other two buildings, it creates a great visual effect to indicate density in the area.

Also, driving east on I4 right before the 408 exit, the view of downtown is improving. Solaire clearly rises above Citrus Center now. That shot will look great with 55W and the Vue added in. In my opinion that is actually one of the best areas to get a shot of downtown. I am always stuck in traffic there, maybe I'll snap a photo next time.

  10. I've been staring at both renderings for a while and I can't find a difference between the two. Anybody else in the same boat?

I agree with you, they both appear identical. I thought we had a modified version posted earlier in this thread somewhere.

Also, after reading the article and seeing the proposed connections, it does not appear that those two renderings represent the project accurately. I believe that modified rendering is a better representation.

Lots of concrete crossover bridges are ugly, but lucky for us that newer bridges over I4 in Orange County are getting that green/cream color coating to them. I believe the Turnpike/429 interchange in West Orange County is a good model to go by, except this new interchange will have downtown as the backdrop versus the rolling green hills of the 429 interchange that look reminiscent of a Windows XP Screen Saver. :silly:

  11. THey haven't gotten the permit for the jumbotron yet (don't know if they've applied for it, though).

I guar-On-tee you that when the visors are done, they will be lit up like the Statue of Liberty's crown-- or at least I hope so-- the only thing stopping it is the potential interference with the penthouse tenant.

nah... that whole bldg. should be lit up like the Wrigley when its done. I'll find out...

I anticipate that the visor will be lit up similar to the Waverly.

  12. Discourages sprawl? Look around. Further, these historic districts existed before Orlando's beloved toll roads and if other metro areas maintain popular historic districts with toll-free highways, I don't see how Orlando would be any different.

I think he means that those areas would not have developed or be developing in the ways that they have because the people who decided to stick around in those areas would have moved out to sprawlville a long time ago if we had all freeways.

I definitely see Jaybee's point, but at the same time I think sprawl is almost inevitable for a metro area, if not now then later. Freeways/toll roads may encourage that, but fundamentally it is an issue of land. If there is open land, then the tendency of people is to keep expanding and spreading. The US has historically had an abundance of land. If you look at other countries, the situation is not quite the same. I was born in Mumbai and that city is pretty well contained on Mumbai Island. Only recently have newer areas began to develop that might be considered sprawl. India is a large nation as well with plenty of land, but the concept of sprawl has not been a key factor in its history the way it has in the US.

As I type that, I am suddenly reminded of a quote from "The Matrix" about humans being like a virus, moving from area to area and using up every available resource before spreading to another area.

  13. I went to Edgewater and our proms were at different places each year, I went to two--The Adam's Mark (I think it was 2000) and the American Pavillon at EPCOT (2001), I really cannot remember which one was worse.

I went to Dr Phillips, I attended prom my junior year at the Omni Rosen Hotel on I Drive, and senior prom at Disney's Contemporary Resort. Where was yours held at, bic?

  14. Nice update.

The slow pace of The Plaza's construction got me thinking about when we can expect this thing to be topped off. So I did some quick calculations, using what seems to be the current rate of one floor being completed roughly every two weeks.

At this rate, we can expect:

-Plaza South Tower to be topped off on November 12, 2005

-Solaire to reach the 20-story milestone on January 7, 2006

-Plaza North Tower to be topped off on January 21, 2006

-Solaire to be topped off on May 27, 2006

Of course this is purely theory based off of extremely rough estimates and does not take into account possible delays due to weather, holidays, etc.

bic, can you re-estimate based on the current progress?
