PROJO:

Work to begin on Wickford Junction station
The train is coming to Wickford Junction.
After more than a decade of planning and securing funding, the state Department of Transportation is set to break ground Wednesday morning on the new Wickford Junction Train Station at 1051 Ten Rod Rd.
Officials hope the station will ultimately become a major link for commuter service provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority that goes from Boston, Providence and T.F. Green Airport in Warwick to South County. The station is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2011.
The total cost of the station is estimated to be $58 million, according to a spokesman for Sen. Jack Reed, who worked to secure the bulk of the project’s government financing. It includes the engineering work, track improvements, train platform construction, the sidetracks and parking garage.
An additional $4.4 million is coming from federal stimulus funds, part of $13.7 million awarded earlier this year to the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority and the state DOT for transportation projects.

Does anyone know when construction will begin in Wickford and who the GC is?
Thanks

So they had a contest to name the new train station at the airport and they come up with the winning name of Interlink. And yesterday the DOT spokesperson says that there will be expanded train service from Providence to the "New Intermodal Station". Doesn't he know about the contest.
Will the expanded train service involve the MBTA or is there another provider lined up? October is coming fast.

The more trains stopping the better. What RIPTA should have is a shuttle that goes from Wickford to Providence and back with stops every 15 minutes. You would need a few trains to keep that schedule. The problem with only 4 trains a day will be most travellers will not want to wait more than 15-25 minutes for the next train. Anything longer and they will want to take a cab or bus.
Otherwise this station will be more to let people off who are coming to the airport rather than picking passengers up who have just landed.

I think the governor likes to have these press events because he looks so handsome with the contstruction hat on. But I am glad there is no glass up on the walkway yet as we are about to get some weather via the tropics in the next few weeks. They will be able to find the orange mesh in Boston after 8/24.
When the first train stops in Warwick and Don and entourage get off I will believe it.

There should definitely be an agreement already signed by the state and the MBTA. The state should also work on getting an agreement with the State of Conn. to extend the Shore Line route east to Providence.
If there are not trains stopping on the day that the new station opens in Sept. 2010 the governor and the entire state will look foolish.
P&W should also be encouraged to run an in state train from Westerly to Woonsocket every day using the exising freight rail and stations. If addtional stations come on line they can be added to the route. (Cranston, EG, Pawtucket/CF, Wickford)
The fourth option would be for Amtrak to also stop there. that will only happen if ridership increases and there is a demand for a station stop.

Most people who have a choice will choose pvd over logan at any chance they can because of the ease of geting in and out of the airport. the cost to park also is a concern. it is much cheaper to park at green and there is space not far from the terminal.
The other factor will be the demand from southern RI and CT. when the station is completed.

Has anyone else been to Prov. Place recently? It is starting to look worn. the rugs are all wrinkled and one escalator was not working this week. Also spotted one vacant store front. The new CVS is a plus however.
And the air conditoning didn't seem to be working to well also. Not sure if much can be done with the owner in bankruptcy.

The parking garage is going up quickly as is the skybridge. This will be an impressive station when it is completed.

It doesn't take much imagination to see that once the runway is extended and train station built, TF Green will become an attractive location for airlines wanting to expand into NE just as Southwest did. If you build it they will come. From east and west.

Thanks Mental for the pictures. Things are finally taking shape there. It will be exciting to see the progress over the next few years.
The ability to transfer to a train in the event of bad weather will distinguish PVD from the other arirports in the area.

How is the constuction going at the Airport? Any pictures? Any updates? thanks.

There are a lot of appartments and houses for rent near PC I have noticed this year. Traditionally students rent these units but there are now appartment style dorms on campus and so many of the off campus houses are available. I would look on Huxley, River, Eaton, or Smith St. the bus also travels down and around campus so you are not that far from the bus line.

Longer runway = international flights (Ryan Air, Virgin Atlantic)
International flights = more domestic flights
more domestic/International flights = more tourists
more tourists = more hotels
more hotels = more money spent in RI
wealthy Europeans = US branches of Euro companies locating to Metro Prov./Warwick

This is probably a dumb question, but what is the building on Pine St. (visible from 195 which I hardly use which is why I ask only now) that is getting a new glass Atrium?

Once the stations are built and people start taking the train the demand should grow for the service and hopefully more trains will be added to the schedule and the route extended to Westerly. By then the price of gas will be $8/gal. which should speed up the process.
Eventually there will be service every 20-25 minutes in each direction. This may not be for another 20 years but as less and less people use their car's there will be a need for more service.

I am just theorizing, there is no new information. I am counting each train down from Boston as stopping twice in Warwick(once in each direction)which is how I come up with 12 stops. But I have no idea. However the more I think of this station I think it will be used as much as a commuter station to Providence and Boston as it will by airline passengers. I don't see many people coming off a plane and waiting an hour for the next train to Providence. Hopefully they will be able to schedule a train every 20 minutes into Providence but with the exisiting plans that won't happen.

Amtrak will stop at the new intermodal station when there is the demand for it. In the meantime the MBTA train from Boston to Wickford will stop there 12 times a day. And by the time it is built, hopefully there will be service to Woonsocket with P&W on a Quonset to Woonsocket line stopping another 8 times a day. And the third possibility is the Connecticut Shore Line train from New Haven to Providence stopping a few times each day. So there might be quite a bit of service in the next few years even without Amtrak.

Does anyone know what the two cranes are behind the Public Safety Building? I see them from 95 S.
thanks.

That would be the new Blue Cross Headquarters building.

was there any mention of the new train station by mr. dillon the other day in his talk at the RI business expo? I didn't see any mention.

The work is mostly being done in front of the airport right now. The construction trailer complex has been put in place on the east side of the tracks and they just finished knocking down a building on the southern tip of the project area (formerly part of the D'Ambra construction property). The garage & station are mostly per-cast, so that will be put together towards the end of the overall project.
But not even a fence with a picture of what the final project will look like. There could be some foundation work going on. It has the same look as where the 110 was going to be built downtown. Like a cancelled project.

Would the Manchester Street Station be worth listing as a tallest structure in Providence? The three smoke stacks are as visible from a distance as the tallest buildings. Just a thought. Not sure of the exact height but they look almost as tall as the buildings in the financial district.
-
Drove by the other day and nothing was going on there. It looks the same as it did last year. One large pile of rubble in the middle of the site. It was a Saturday but it looks like there is nothing happening. No signs, no pictures, no equipment, no progress two years post ground breaking ceremony.
-
One company can change that by themselves if they decide to. With three possible projects in the power block the Proc. Group could keep things busy downtown for the next five years.
And then there is VDT, Brown Medical School New Campus, Conley Wharf, Parcel 12, New Intermodal light rail station somewhere downtown and who know's what else.

I can't wait to ride the new escalator over Post Road to rent a car at the new Interlink. That should be exciting and worth the wait. Not.
