  1. I always said put in a Dave & Busters, H & M, Club Monaco, FCUK, Bennetton, Grand Lux Cafe, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Pei Wei Asian Diner, Adventurer's club type of attraction, Revive Jungle Jim's, Dick's Last Resort, Best Buy, Trader Joes, Barnes and Noble and an attached hotel for all the shoppers going to Prime, would be a good addition to the mall. Hell, through in a Major Department store like Marks & Spencer for the British Folk and you got it made.

Now I can wake up. Seriously though I agree: This mall just won't die. It's an themed mall search for a theme. You got just a whole bunch of outlet stores thrown in with a BCBG (why they are in the mall, I never know) and mom and pa stores that sells incense burners and stuff. I just don't get this place.

    ^^

My friends, Festival Bay will never die. It survived a splitting from Belz Corp., 9-11, and the construction of Prime in Belz' place. This place is like the cockroach through nuclear winter.

Now that Prime is bringing 'em in in droves-- look at the backed up traffic on I-Drive around mid-day to 6pm on weekends now, business will only get better at FB.

Bass Pro Shops is too big a draw for that place to ever go under, plus its got a 1/2 dozen mall stores mixed in there like BCBG, Charlotte Russe, Jones NY, and a few more (sorry, not a chick, can't remember), along with the Cinema and Universal's store, and Fuddrucker's and Bergamo's (still open?).

All they need to do is put better signage in front showcasing which stores are actually in there and perhaps sign a major department store and forget about their original marketing plan; get a Gamestop and a Best Buy (Millenia has Circuit City). I think that could work. Turn it into a mall of big-box stores. You already have Bass and the Cinema. Is Shepler's still open? I know there's a sportswear store too...

And last of all, build out 2-3 out-parcels with restaurants. it's not like there isn't enough parking.

I would also try for a skywalk or two-- one to Prime, and the other across I-Drive to one of those plazas.

As for the sign, maybe go Vegas-style with it; light-boards and video screens; something to attract your attention. And at night, get some automated spotlights in the water to make you think you're near Citywalk or DT Disney.

  3. I think the Whole Foods on Turkey Lake was supposed to open yesterday. Does anyone know if the other stores in that shopping center have opened yet?

Whole Foods was scheduled to open on June 25th. There were tons of cars in the parking lot today as I drove by; probaby check it out over the weekend. As for as the other stores, nothing has opened yet. The only sign that has gone up is the Pei Wei Asian Diner (part of the P.F. Changs family), but it hasn't opened yet. Michaels, Golf Galaxy, and some sushi place are the only ones I know of going into the development as of yet. Cold Stone Creamery is opening in the Dr. Philips Marketplace down the road.

  4. I was driving down Universal Blvd the other day right behind the Westgate Palace there was a sign for the proposed "THE EMPIRE", which looked like a replica of the Empire State Building in NY. I think it supposed to be a condo hotel or maybe just condos. I tried looking in Orlando Skyscrapers to see if I can find any info about it, but nothing was posted. Do you know if this project is dead, on hold, just proposed or someones pipe dream?

  5. Since being new to the city of Orlando; I'm not that up to date on the whole commuter issue other than finding out that the project seems like its DOA. Question: All the money that was set aside for this project including the widening of I4 with 4 additional lanes; that's also dead? Gone? This is the only city where I lived that didn't have some sort of mass transit system and for the first time in 20 years I have to buy myself a extra vehicle, which I'm not keen on doing. Even though I love living in Florida, I sometimes wonder why I moved to Orlando. Very frustrating.

  6. Didn't realize it had a name.

Very little of what Disney is today is anything about Walt's original vision. But the reality of the situation is that in the 80's Walt's Disney was essentially taken over by a new consortium, even though it still involved one person with the Disney name and had the consent of the board. Today's Disney is simply not Walt's Disney.

Do I think there is any benefit to the public for the West Side Project (which makes me wonder what they will call the West Side at Downtown Disney). But as far as the companies self interests go, they can't do much to stop the growth that happens outside the borders. But they can certainly rake in the big bucks if they can get a piece of that growth. The cachet of being on property adds bucks. And if you can draw people away from the current centers like LBV, all the better.

I always thought people went to Disney to escape their mundane reality without being subjected to places where they are part of everyday life. It's attractions such as La Nouba, Disney Quest that make it unique and destination restaurants like Bongos, House of Blues, T-Rex, Rainforest Cafe and Planet Hollywood where they are not located in their hometowns; that make it memorable. I said memorable...not good!

How is bringing in TJ Maxx, Olive Garden, Ross Dress for Less and TGI Fridays going to make it memorable or unique to people?

  7. I read on a website that the Dolly Parton Dixie Stampede is thinking of relocating in Disney when they open that big box Flamingo Crossings shopping district.

Who else has a bad taste about this Flamingo Crossing project? Does Disney really need a have an Econolodge on their property? Wasn't the whole point why Disney bought all this acreage in Orlando is to not duplicate the problem of Disneyland, with all those tacky motels/restaurants adjacent to the park? Seems like this is going totally against Walt's original plan.

  8. Starwood announced that they would build one of their new eco friendly Element hotels near Universal Orlando. The first Element hotel will actually open in Boston later this spring while the 137 room Orlando hotel will open in August 2009. Not sure if this was what you were referring to.

Starwood's new Aloft brand is also coming to the convention center. It will be adjacent to the new Element hotel. I think they are planning another Aloft hotel near the airport as well.

  9. man, that Hilton at the OCCC is such a huge deal. we are so fortunate that it's being built. That will really elevate our convention product big time. same goes for Peabody's second tower-- but I'll do a wait and see on that for right now.

Pointe Orlando's renovations I think have helped the OCCC more than we realize--- I took it for granted, but those conventioneers need that entertainment option near the facility.

although Westin might just end up being the one tower, I hope Rosen's ego gets him off his butt to do that project he talked about last year, then ORL would have a real coup on their hands.

I agree with the Pointe. The last time I was there is was bustling with activity; though it still has a long way to go before reaching its potential (many stores are still vacant). I'm still not sure how the Square will be viable being so close to the Pointe. If they are looking for an extension of the types of stores and/or restaurants that the Pointe has to offer, than I say it will met with success; if it plans to go the route of the former Pointe, then the place is doomed.

Speaking of the Westin, have we heard of an opening date yet? Any idea when the rest of the Village of Imagine will be scheduled to be complete?

  10. What a great idea!

I could see Disney doing a park with four separate areas NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA.

Rides could be based on former stars from each sport. Babe Ruth roller coaster.

Wilt Chamberlain tunnel of love. , etc...

The kiddie area could be soccer.

Or how about the Kobe Bryant house of ......oh never mind :P

  11. How funny, I just went to one two nights ago in Rancho Bernardo CA and I enjoyed it and I thought, this would probably go over well in Orlando. Do they have the single paddle fans running off one motor throughout the bar area as well? I had the macadamia nut crusted chicken with grilled shrimp and it was very good. It was $14.95 and had a full split boneless chicken breast about 20 shrimp, veggies and rice. The menu is titled "Pacific Rim" cuisine.

I think they started out in CA. They do have the single fans, but I remember them at the host area when you come in. I was thinking of the macadamia nut crusted chicken last night, I'll have to try it next time. The prices are pretty reasonable for the amount of food they present to you. They were on a 20-25 min. wait on a Wednesday, so I think they are doing fairly well.

  12. We tried the Elephant Bar & Restaurant in the Altamonte Mall last night for dinner. Sort of like a P.F Changs atmosphere with a pretty varied menu with items such as Kung Pao and Sweet n Sour Chicken to Burgers, Salads, Beef, Lamb, etc. The Kung Pau; though not as tasty as the P.F. Chang's version was made with grilled Tofu which was different. They are building another location adjacent to the Mall of Millenia.

  13. that's too bad... Dixie always seemed to be busy on the weekends...

that mall needs a retail enema... they need that surf park for starters; then they need some more outlet-type retailers like the Kaspar, Nine-West type, and more mall stores like the BCBG and Charlotte Russe that's there.

maybe if they built a huge Old Navy there... maybe Millennia's is too close... I got it... just build a flippin Kohl's since they're popping up everywhere anyway.

I always thought the Festival Bay mall was a themed type mall searching for a theme. Nothing fits. They have national retailers like BCBG mixed in with outlet mall stores. The indoor mini golf looked like it was thrown in at the last minute.

  14. I will say this... Festival Bay was built way too late from when it should've opened originally. that being said, it does have a somewhat healthy inventory of stores now...and I'll leave it at that.

The Vans Skate Park is quite a destination. It is a very busy tenant at that mall. There's always lots of people at Festival Bay, except there's not enough stores. I think they should change their business model a bit and get some normal retailers in there to fill those spaces and get some more magnet stores in there too.

I don't know how much more Ron Juan would add other than just augment what Vans provides atmosphere-wise. The restaurants seem to be doing ok. I think they need at least one more major anchor in there to offset Bass Pro Shops and the Cinema.

In the beginning, it was a Belz property like the malls across the street. That's not the case anymore.

I think Dixie Crossroads is now closed. I haven't been to any of the other restaurants other than Fuddruckers which I ended up getting sick afterwards. I wish they would of kept the Murray Bros. Caddyshack restaurant. I went to the one out by St. Augustine and the place was very busy and the food was quite good.

  15. They have one at Legends in Kansas City,KS. It's a KIds type Retsrauant.

It's a new chain of restraurants developed by Landry, who owns the Rainforest Cafe. Yes, the place is very enticting for kids, but like the Rainforest Cafe, it does cater to all age groups. They built the first one in the Legends Shopping area in KCKC. It has the same feel as the Rainforest. Except a big gift shop attached to the restaurant.

Speaking of Restaurants, how about our city getting a Grand Lux Cafe and a Cheeseburger in Paradise? I'm thinking if the Festival Bay mall can land the Grand Lux with the CIP as an outparcel pad with a Dave & Busters plus the opening of the Ron Juan Surfpark, the Festival Bay mall would be kick-ass.
