  1. What if the H&M opened under the Midtown Target?

Or does Target have some sort of agreement that says another clothing retailer cannot move in the building?

What if H&M went to a site on Elizabeth Avenue with parking in back? I really don't think Southpark is as much of a competition with Uptown anymore, compared to Midtown.

Unfortunately, Uptown doesn't seem to have enough independent purchasing power to support walk-only retail, especially on evenings and weekends. With lower land costs supporting conventional retail floor plans and parking, Midtown seems to be the happy medium. Though just outside Uptown, Midtown is where "Center City" (read Uptown, plus first-ring neighborhoods) does have enough collective (and largely untapped) purchasing power within a short drive. And hybrid designs like Metropolitan and Restaurant Row mix walkable storefront with shared or structured parking on cheaper Midtown land, serving both customers arriving by foot and vehicle. Plus, Uptown residents may be less likely to get in their car, as many do now for even Metropolitan, once streetcar links Elizabeth Avenue.

  2. Agreed. An A/X would be sweet. My gf spoke to an H&M employee at Crabtree when we were in Raleigh last week and they said that they are looking at expanding into Charlotte soon.

I disagree. I think it's long overdue for A/X to enter our market! If ATL can support 2 locations and Kansas City has one then we can definitely support one. ESP. With all the transplants that live here!

  3. Kalu is unbelievable. Go there now. I went with my lady and we enjoyed some porkbellies, wagyu beef, japanese style wings, a sushi roll, and a garlic rice pot. The rice was the best quality I have had in Charlotte. It can get expensive if you're drinking, but the specialty cocktails and beers are impressive.

Brian was a really nice guy and we had a chance to chat with him since we were there late towards closing. He even brought us some plum wine or sake....can't remember exactly.

The presentation is awesome and the service was good.

    Definitely going back soon.

It's the ground floor/retail level of the Courtside condo building. The parking valets are on the corner of 6th & Caldwell.

Head Chef Brian Emperor is pretty well known, he was on Bravo's "Top Chef" U.S. tour earlier this year. Here are some links...

  4. just drove past the salvation army at five points and I noticed that they were clearing out on the corner. I'd imagine that the piece of real estate on the corner is quite valuable - any idea what the plans for the corner are? I'd love to see some more action continue towards plaza midwood. Central has become such an awesome bar crawl. 2nd date with my girlfriend we hit 6 or 7 different bars: common house, soul, twenty-four, cafe central, thirsty beaver, and intermezzo. Now you can throw in the fabulous jalapeno margaritas at Loco Lime, and add in some Bistro la Bon. Now we just need the frame store next to grand central to convert as well as the old napa store (interior renovation recently started but not sure what is happening). I'm hoping that the salvation army is moving, but I haven't heard anything. Elizabeth - PM = fantastic place to live.

  5. don't you think this is the ideal spot for another hotel? Of course, the industry is getting slammed right now, but hopefully by the time it's completed the market will have rebounded. Another trendy or boutique hotel would be sweet.

  6. a few months ago I came across an ad in US Airways magazine for a condo development in Tempe that seemed remarkably similar to what Grubb is proposing in Elizabeth. check out the following link:

Mosaic Tempe is the name. I'm sure it's locked up due to the credit crunch, but I thought that the project was interesting. Replace the condo tower with the hotel and you have it.

on a side note, I am really, really hoping that the businesses stay alive through the construction. NOFO opened Mexicafe and it features $1 beers all day saturday. any beer! That's nice in a tough economy

  7. about the old central five ways mart...it's correct that the coming soon sign has been up for around a year, but there actually has been some progress the last two weeks.

we really need some more action at this intersection. a little bit further down central closer to hawthorne I think they are working on another restaurant spot. Expect more to come as residents fill the new apartments on hawthorne

retail/restaurant follow residents even in a down economy...especially those living in Elizabeth with fat wallets in nice apartments

  8. I live in the Rutzler (awesome) and have been anxiously waiting for renovation of the central five ways mart. For a few months there had not been any movement, but in the last few weeks they re-started clean-up. There is a trash receptacle onsite, but there has not been any noticeable difference to the exterior.

As far as the Thirsty Beaver goes, I've heard good things but haven't made it over yet. There's word that they are going to build some outdoor seating. I always wanted to check out the Rose Garden but it was just a tad too shady...

  9. A new coffee place is opening across from Intermezzo at the corner of Louise and Central. The sign indicates that Central Coffee and Creamery is coming soon (too bad it's not called Central Perk).

This is a heck of a lot better than the drug-ridden Central 5 ways convenience store.

The 5 point intersection is really coming along as there is also rumor of a bagel place opening up soon.

  10. Real cool atmosphere with a nice little interior bar. When I first looked at the menu I thought it was Greek-owned, but then I got the low-down on the owners from one of the bartenders. I haven't tried the food, but they do have a great selection of beers on tap.

The same bartender indicated that they may expand the restaurant to the rest of the building depending on how business goes. Tha patio will be real nice when the weather cools off a little.

Additionally, it was mentioned that a group of investors was in the process of buying the Grand Central building. They plan on turning it back into a club (it used to be a swing club before catering/events hall). This five point intersection has the chance to be a destination. I wonder what the chances are that the Salvation Army relocates their store.

What goes in the former car shop in between 10th and Central? Hot Dog stand? Price's Chicken Coop II? That's a tough little spot to work with.

  11. The old Burger King is closed and the new one is open for business. When do you think that demolition will begin on the gas station and old BK? Let's get the new Whole Foods started!

In other news, there is a new sign up oustide for the new Starbucks that is replacing where Anderson's used to be. It appears that they are managing to add a drive through along the side of the building.

Elizabeth is going to continue to keep on blowing up (pun intended)!

  12. Has anyone seen the new paint job for what will soon be Intermezzo Pizza at the five point intersection on Central? Does anyone know if this establishment will be serving delicious adult beverages?

How about 5 points becoming a cool little destination of its own? Common is playing at Grand Central tonight, so they continue to get some good events. Any idea if Salvation Army will part with it's land?

Additionally, the parcel right in the middle is a unique spot that seems difficult to work with due to parking issues. Maybe something similar to Price's, DQ, or a walkup hot dog or sandwich stand?
