Great shots here. That's Ye olde Masonic Temple if I'm not mistaken. Or is it the church next door like the last two photos indicate (can't tell if they're supposed to show which building the other photos are from or just be roof shots)? I've always wanted to go in and look around both. They're some of my favorite buildings in GR. I used to live back on Oakley Pl, and on my way to church (in heartside) sometimes I'd just walk past them and stare for a second.
I once read a post about a great view from a men's room window in the Masonic Temple. Maybe that is it!

John E, so glad you joined up - what a contributor! Happy New Year!
!!

Not that you'd admit anyway.
Ha! Now, what did I find on live maps but a surface parking on that triangular lot behind GRPD. Where did that beautiful building go? An art supply store on the front point on the first floor was in that building, I think for all the years I lived in GR. I loved that building.
-
They have left the inside in tact. I got a tour of it last week.
That is great news - a real surprise in this day and age.
Interesting about the men's room vantage point! In exploring the building (mid-1960's) I don't believe us girls ever ventured into mens rooms!

Google does: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&....61951326628071
So does Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=...onic&m=text
Very interesting inside also. When I was in junior high, my friends and I would serve dinner to large groups of Masons for a few bucks. We always spent time running around the whole building, up and down elevators, etc. If it leases office space, I hope they have not destroyed the interior.

Heck, the snow makes it prettier and more festive!
This is Michigan. It is December. Warm footwear is available at any shoe retailer. People down south can only dream of a white Christmas or walking in a winter wonderland or letting it snow.
(has visited Houston and Louisiana for holidays, found all the Currier & Ives motifs ironical)
Jealous here! After 32 years of Southern Christmases - still can't get used to it. Of course, all my shopping was done on Monroe in the 60's & 70's. Enjoy yourselves!

Just started reading "The Reckoning" published in 1986. Scarry how far back some people knew what was coming but the big 3 turned a blind eye.

One last skyline for the year before the leaves fall:
Thanks, Dad - beautiful!

I'm not sure this belongs anywhere here but, it's fun: check out www.beaufortgazette.com "Beaufort chalks up another accolade" and you'll see our waterfront - about two blocks from my work. I notice that St. Joseph, MI is also listed in the article.

I think it was at the Southeast corner of Michigan and Ionia, where that ugly 5 story law office building is now. Actually, it's the building that is holding that webcam for the med school. I guess it does serve some good purpose.
Here's a postcard, and I would guess this a looking South down Ionia. It appears that there is a park on Michigan Street to the left in this photo (where the Division Ave/I-196 overpass mess is now). According to the library, it was five brewing companies merged into one.
Thanks, Dad. What memories! I think no matter what generation, GR people all seem to be fascinated with the city in which they live! What a place.
-
That is cool. Does anyone remember exactly where the old brewery (Fox?) building fit in on Michigan Hill? I remember taking note of that historic building back in 1961, for some reason.

Sure. We could probably find some cold-hardy palms for just such an occasion. d8alterego, you bring up a good point. Plus, there is the large Ellis parking lot by the courthouse and 5 Lyon, and everyone's favorite Lyon & Ottawa lot that could be great spots for future development.
And this goes well with MOBL NOBL's vision for the Belknap stairs:
http://www.moblconnects.com/Site/Home.html
I think this idea has enough merit to forward along to some people.
As long as you don't find cold, clammy palms
-
I remember you mentioning a tunnel and I was wondering where it was. Too bad it doesn't still exist, but if it was maintained the same way the stairs have been I can see why.
It was pretty creepy in the late '60's when some of us female teenagers walked through it. And dark!
-
So I found the top of the second set of stairs on Belknap Hill. I thought the open set of stairs were in bad shape, but at least that one contains actual stairs. The second set contains a tree where stairs once were:
Obviously pedestrian facilities were a real priority for the city in the previous decades.
Cool pics. I think one time I brought up an under Division walkway. I think I see where it was on maps live. Looking at N Division with Ionia in the picture (where Ionia meets with Fairbanks St NW) you can see the bottom of one of the stairways to Belknap then below it, a bit to the north, a short set of stairs to the edge of Division and, directly across, another short set of stairs on the other side of Division. I think that is where the under-the-road walkway was.
-
Yay! I haven't been anyones favorite person in a long time
PS - If you want to see any of the other shots I took of the basilica you can find them on my Flickr page in the set named "West Side GR"
I do and I will - thanks for the info!

Why, you're my favorite person today!!

Veloise - beautiful pictures...brought back some wonderful memories. Sure wish I could convince my mom to get a computer!

I've not known of a tunnel under Division, where was that located at? The other set of stairs is in very bad shape. Unmaintained, so bushes and trees are growing out over it, broken beer bottles and bums' clothes all over the place, and sections where the stairs have completely disappeared and the ground eroded away. Near the top I had to climb from dirt back up onto concrete about waist-high, and sections of railing are few and far between.
The tunnel was pretty close to those old stairs and, if I remember correctly, there was a school for difficult to teach young children across division from the area of the stairs and the tunnel. My memory would say it was Coldbrook School but, I could not find anything on the net. I was pretty old back in the 1960's, though still operating. I suspect it has long since been torn down. I wonder if the tunnel was filled in / blocked off or something. It would probably be dangerous to use it if it was still there.
-
But my favorite stairs are the ones from Division up the Belknap Hill. Just climbed them tonight carrying my bike. Nice shortcut from the north near-westside to my house in Midtown.
They lead right up to Trowbridge:
Sorry - staying I loved those in the 60's but they were in bad shape - redone? is there still a walking - tunnel under division in that area
-
I was having that issue earlier as well, but the problem appears to be fixed. I was able to open GRDadof3's link to Kurt Kimball's website in the roads discussion.
I keep having to re-sign in. It says "you are now signed in as....." and in a flash, I'm not.

To try to be more positive after a year of losses. I think if I put more effort into helping others, that would be a very positive step in the right direction!
And, UP-GR sure is wonderful. Always very interesting and I love when I get a chuckle out of some posts. And the pictures - what can I say? You all are so talented. I can't believe I just happened on UP by accident.
-
If it's on Fuller, it is St. Isadore. Great pics as usual!
-
Here are some photos I took at Meijer Gardens of the new Calder there on loan, and the George Rickey exhibit. You can make out some fall foliage in the background pr sc.
WOW! Thanks again. Beautiful photos and beautiful colors. It would be a sad thing to forget that something such as that exists.
-
Thanks, Dad! I sure wish my mom would get a computer. Hard to convince an 83 year old, though. You'd think she would change her mind after listening to me talk about all the neat stuff on UP-GR....says she's going to make a list of things for me to ask about!
