  1. That I've seen done quite often. The military practices touch and go with several large aircraft at various times throughout the year. I've watched one morning as one of those huge cargo planes kept circling around doing touch and go, it's crazy when that thing comes in over Williamsburg Road.

    Funny that you said that because I was back by the airport today driving down Williamsburg Road and a KC-10 flew right over me. Talk about a monster. I saw it circle for multiple touch and go's as well.

  2. Does anyone know what kind of effect the Rolls Royce plant in Prince George County will have on RIC once it opens in 2009? I know that our plant is producing general aviation jet engines so I was wondering how often we might have cargo planes shipping them out or if they would be transported to Dulles or something to be taken on a larger international cargo plane. Case in point, I know that Glasgow, Scotland has a Rolls Royce engine factory right next to the main passenger airport, yet sometimes when they ship out the engines they will use Prestwick Airport (a cargo center) which is about 30 miles from the city center. Do you think we will see any heavy cargo airplanes roll in occasionally with the opening of the plant?

  3. I have recently been to RIC during the night and have noticed that the Delta 752 is no longer there. Has Delta's night flight from Atlanta reverted back to an MD-88?

    I checked the Delta website and it looks like they are back to having only one 757 flight out of Richmond now instead of the two or three they had been doing recently. They are using it for the mid-afternoon flight that departs at 3:25. As it stands now, Delta (excluding the regional partners) has 4 MD-88 flights, 3 CRJ-700 flights, and 1 757 daily.

  4. Great pictures...Richmond's runway is definitely long enough to land planes like 747's and 777's. I can remember in the mid 90's the AN-124 landed at Richmond to take a large shipment of tobacco from Philip-Morris back to Moscow. The problem was that it was such a risky landing for a plane that big that it took the AN-124 at least 10 tries to finally land (I remember seeing it fly over my neighborhood multiple times that day). Richmond also handled the USAF C-5 Galaxy which used to land at Richmond on a monthly basis when the National Guard was stationed there and that plane is about the same size as the AN-124. Runway length is not a problem for landing planes if we need to handle them; the problem is that our runway length is only 9,000 feet where most airports that handle jumbo jets on a regular daily basis are at least 10,000 feet. But I still think we should build another runway at KRIC that's at least 10,000 feet, that'd be great.

  5. Go to http://www.delta.com and on the left side of the page look near the bottom and it will say flight status. Type in RIC in the from box and ATL in the "to" box and you'll see a list of all the daily flights with the aircraft type. JetBlue's official website is jetblue.com however they don't list their aircraft types on the flight list. You can go to www.flightarrivals.com though and see all flights arriving and departing from Richmond within the present 3 hour time frame. If you click on the flight number it most of the time will show the aircraft type. Some of the JetBlue flights are still using E190's but some are using the A320's.

  6. Since when did Delta start flying two 757 flights daily out of Richmond?! And I was looking at flightarrivals.com today and saw that JetBlue was using an A320 for at least one of it's flights to JFK instead of the E190. That's definitely a good sign.

  7. Anyone have any idea why runway 16/34 was closed today? I drove by at about 11:30 and saw a Delta MD-88 which usually lands on the longer runway land on 2/20. When I got near the airport I saw there was a truck with a 20 foot X sign on the back of it and many more airport vehicles on the end near Williamsburg Road. Just wondering if it was maintanence or there was a problem with it or maybe some surverying of some kind.
