  1. I went to the Super Bi-Lo tonight and was not that impressed. I thought their produce section was excellent. I think the classic HT across the street still has a better deli.

Sorry, to rehash an old topic, but I've been in the store now that it's a Publix, and all I had say is wow!  Impressive what they've done in 6 months.  Same general layout as the old Super Bi-lo, but what an upgrade!  And the HT across the street is being renovated (as well as giving my good coupons).

  2. for some reason I forgot about the HT at Johnston at Ardrey Kell. I forgot that HT is at each of the main intersections of Ardrey Kell (Providence, Rea, Johnston).

I drove by the former Lowe's Foods location at Johnston and Lancaster Highway last night and the sign is up saying HT coming soon. Also have noticed that HT prices have started to creep back up.

  3. "I don't shop at Lowes, but what about the Lowes in Ballantyne, it's less than a minute away from the HT at Ardey Kell?"

"The Lowe's in Ballantyne will be subleased. It's 5 minutes from the HT Ardrey Kell Location and directly across the street from HT's Providence Commons location."

The above is a little mis-worded.

There is an HT at Johnston and Ballantyne Commons. That's the only HT truly in Ballantyne. There is no Lowe's Foods in Ballantyne.

There is an HT at Johnston and Ardrey Kell. This is just south (approx 0.6 miles) of the Lowe's on Johnston (just south of Ballantyne). I haven't seen any mention of this Lowe's in the article/announcement.

There is an HT at Ballantyne Commons and Providence (in Providence Commons). Across Ballantyne Commons is a Lowe's. This Lowe's will be subleased to another retailer.

(Substitute 521 for Johnston above, if you like.)

for some reason I forgot about the HT at Johnston at Ardrey Kell. I forgot that HT is at each of the main intersections of Ardrey Kell (Providence, Rea, Johnston).

  4. I don't shop at Lowes, but what about the Lowes in Ballantyne, it's less than a minute away from the HT at Ardey Kell? IMO, Lowes has similar pricing to HT, but it just didn't feel like a HT. While HT said this transaction isn't b/c of Publix it just might be.

The Lowe's in Ballantyne will be subleased. It's 5 minutes from the HT Ardrey Kell Location and directly across the street from HT's Providence Commons location.

is Bi-Lo still in Charlotte? If not it sounds like the Charlotte grocery market is now pretty much Harris Teeter on almost every corner in well to do areas with Food Lions, Aldi and Wal-Marts in the not so upscale areas.... I wonder of there will be a Publix invasion for Charlotte soon.....

I wonder if there will be a shakeup in the Triangle soon as we still have Kroger, Lowes Foods, Harris Teeters, Aldi, Wal-Mart Supercenters, Super Targets and Food Lions scattered all over the area. It does seem as if Harris Teeter is trying to saturate Charlotte to try and block entry from other grocery store.....

Yes, Bi-Lo is still in Charlotte, but they have a much smaller footprint than they once did. The Publix invasion is already coming. They are building locations in Fort Mill and Indian Land and just announced a location in Rock Hill.

  5. After a two year hiatus, The Grand Asia Market is back on track for Stallings. I will be glad to see something in the old Winn-Dixie space that's been vacant almost 5 years. I think the success of Enzo's Italian Market in the same shopping center may have brought this project back to life.

The store is going to open by year end. I was by there tonight, it looks much nicer than the Winn-Dixie that once occupied that location.

  6. The Bi-Lo in Indian Trail closed down on March 6. Is it a victim of Wal-Mart Super Center just down the road? or the not very far away Super Bi-Lo in Matthews? To be honest, I haven't shopped at that Bi-Lo since the one in Matthews opened, and didn't even know it had shut down until today.

  7. Oh wow really? I don't recall that! Interesting

This was before Bi-Lo spun off their underperforming stores. I wonder if they were trying to make themselves more attractive to a buyer back then. But as you stated, Lowes Foods typically does not buy existing stores.

BTW, I went to the new Lowes Foods in Wesley Chapel and was amazed at how similar in layout it is to the Super Bi-Lo in Matthews. I also visited the Bloom in Fort Mill the other day, and I definitely see the Super Bi-Lo becoming a Bloom if the Food Lion merger goes through.

  8. Perhaps. There is also irony in the location of the HT Dist Cntr as there is a Food Lion right across the street. I doubt it will be a Lowes Foods for another reason though, Lowes Foods doesn't take over any old stores in the Charlotte area - all their stores have been built brand new. (not very green lol)

That's true, but Lowes Foods did consider acquiring Bi-Lo back in 2005.

  9. or it may remain empty, despite its visibility. Remember, neither Harris Teeter or Lowes Foods was interested in the former Winn Dixie in Stallings (Potter Road)...

Yes, but the Winn Dixie in Stallings didn't have the square footage. This Bi Lo Does, and the Harris Teeter distribution center is just down the road.

  10. http://www.foodlion.com/pharmacyhealth/ select stores have pharmacies so they might expand that.

I found that same link about 2 seconds after I posted that. At least they have the $4 prescriptions like Bi-Lo, but I'm going to hate having to pay $10.99 rather that $10 for the 90 day prescriptions. ;)

What's going to happen with the Bi-Lo in Indian Trail. You go North, South, or East from that store and there is a Food Lion. Could that one be converted to Bloom or will they just let it sit empty?

  11. With the Super Bi-Lo at McKee Farms, I can see 3 possible scenarios:

    1. Food Lion indeed converts it to Bloom (most likely)

    2. Food Lion sells a few stores and this one is sold to Lowes Foods (the store is very similar to Lowes Foods in layout)

    3. Food Lion sells the store to Harris Teeter and they move across the street (least likely)

Best thing is, I do not see this one sitting as an empty big box.

  12. The Super BI-LO at the corner of Weddington Rd. and Mckee rd.(near Matthews and Stallings) is almost finished. I think I heard it's opening on March 5th. Anyone know if it's that much better than a reg. BI-LO? There's already a Harris Teeter across the street. I can't see that many people switching from Teeter to BI-LO unless it's really nice. Those folks over there don't really care much about low prices. They just want nice, well lit stores with good meat, good produce departments, and clean bathrooms.

The store opens Wednesday (March 19th)
