Whenever I see this picture in the City Paper, I want to yell "Don't jump!" at that little lady in the black cocktail dress. It looks like an ad for depression counseling.

Then again, I'd like to see all the housing projects on the 8th Ave North corridor destroyed and the entire area becoming an urban boulevard right into MetroCenter over the interstate. Germantown would be the perfect old urban neighborhood beside the new corridor.
I'm sure the people living in those projects wouldn't want to see them destroyed, unless suitable alternatives exist. The projects might not be our ideal notion of what is urban, but they're urban nonetheless, and provide cheap housing for the people who work in the urban core.
Part of smart growth isn't just having pretty buildings that interact well with the master-planned street grid. Having low-income housing is important also, and the thought of displacing certain people who contribute to our city just because their dwellings are ugly--that's kind of unpleasant to me.
