  1. It's actually much worse than this. The often mis-interpreted unemployment rate only counts the people seeking unemployment benefits. It does not count the people whose benefits have already run out, people who have given up on trying to find a job, people not eligible, and anyone who managed to get a part time job to make ends meet. It does not count people who have had their hours, pay and bonuses cut by their employers.

There is much more to the measurement of the unemployment rate than simply measuring those seeking benefits. It is important to remember the stat is a parameter of measurement that remains constant throughout time to provide some level of insight. If you want to capture the people excluded from the unemployment rate there are other statistics that do so.

  2. Am I a horrible person for disliking funeral processions? They clog up traffic and take the police away from patrol. The person in the hearse does not care...since they are dead! I don't want one when I die. They are being banned in some states because they have caused accidents. I suppose the idea of a motorcade is to honor the deceased but I just don't see it that way. My parents want to be cremated and tossed into the ocean, I am thinking that's a good idea for me as well. A traffic jam is not my idea of a noble sendoff to wherever we go after our time here is up.

The procession is more about allowing the group to arrive at the funeral site together. It really sucks to hold up a burial because someone was caught up in traffic; even worse to proceed without someone.

  3. You know all those buildings that we tore down that we wished we still had? Well, this is one of them, and it is still standing and just needs some amigos to put up the bricks again with some new mortar. Give me a break.

Perhaps I am unaware, but what historical significance does this building carry? I generally prefer to save buildings with historical events tied to them. However, I wouldn't want to save it simply because it is old.

  4. A friend of mine who works for Parks and Rec was telling me last night that they are really going to be leaning on this park to be a major entertainment venue with concerts and events. Hopefully this will really bring 3rd Ward alive.

For Speed Street, it will almost have to be a concert area. There are fewer and fewer lots available. :alc:

  5. How do you know that tunnel form construction will no longer be used? I think we need to have facts before potentially false statements are made.

sleightofhand, who made the comment, it a very credible source on this specific tower.

  6. I do think it will really help the upper part of the 4th Ward shed the bad trend that Spectrum started with its J&W Apartments. If 4W can get higher quality towers on its remaining surface lots instead of low quality lowrise projects, I think everyone benefits.

I was ok with the J&W development. I believe the rotating cynergy of youth offsets the building.

  7. The N Club in Greensboro is an old theatre converted to a bar/nightclub. It has been a staple nightclub for some time now. The dance floor actually has the phased slope which works well for concerts. Charlotte could actually take a few notes from what the owner has done with that club and a couple others in Greensboro.

  8. Sleight, you say they can't be resold within one year -- do you know what can or will be done if that is attempted?

A gentle nudge from the 49th floor balcony...

  9. This will do wonders for the connectivity of College from the convention center to the College/5th intersection. Too bad right across College will be a blank wall, though.

Maybe BofA will allow some large scale marketing on that wall...

or at least a mural of Omeka, May, and Felton!

  10. The rendering I was referring to is now online.

    Lobby.jpg

You can see the retail, the fancy materials, the fountain, the planting box, and the windows into the lobby. I think that with those details at the ground level, that this will be pedestrian friendly. The rendering shows lots of people milling around, so that must be true :).

That will make my walk home from work a little more enjoyable... Do you know what buildings are going to fill in the remaining 3/4 ths of the block? You mentioned the firehouse, any midrises?

  11. the lobby entrance faces Pine and the teeter. The deck faces cityview and 5th. in the closeup/streetlevel rendering at the sales office, you are right, the deck looked really plainjane.... (MC says it is almost as bad as the holidayinn/trade center deck... but no way imo.) It is basically just open with a 4' tall brick wall on every floor to hide the cars.

Will there be first level retail in the deck... ala, Stool Pigeons?

  12. Would people really want to live right next door to an open air ballpark?

Heck, Greensboro had an initiative last election trying to prevent one from being built.

I voted for the stadium.... It was privately funded. This was another case of a few people shouting real loud to force an issue. The stadium passed 2 to 1 by the voters.

What still gets me is that the most vocal opposition to the stadium were those who lived on the edge of downtown! Downtown comes with a bit of noise and light, even without a stadium.

I would very much like to see the new baseball proposal in 2nd ward go through.

  13. Actually Cotton Mills is outside the historic district as well.....that block and the Polk Bldg.......however the blocks of the west of Graham and north of 6th are in the district.......not sure why, especially since the Cotton Mills building is the most historic commercial building in uptown IMO.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Would that lead you to believe the Polk Bldg is a possible site?

  14. I'm very interested to see how that works out as far as gearing towards women.  I think even the higher-ups in the firm are a little mystified at how that works out.

Did anyone think of Bosom Buddies?
