  1. The Overture luxury 55+ apartments were approved by City Council tonight in a rescheduled vote originally set for last week's zoning meeting. Originally over 200 units, Greystar of Charleston reduced the number of units to 158 in response to neighborhood concerns about density. It will be built on the site of the Masonic Temple on Randolph south of Sharon Amity. It must have nice elevations since Claire Fallon said "and it doesn't look like everything else in Charlotte".

  2. Just out of curiosity I called Randolph Park Apartments today, inquired, and was told I can lease a unit long-term beginning October 1st. It doesn't sound like there is imminent development at this site. The current rumor in our neighborhood is that Target will also be at the rezoning site at Fairview and Providence. Hopeful.

  3. Thanks for that. I was thinking that now that the developer has been selected, we might see something more definitive in the coming months.

The agreement between the developer and the State hasn't been executed. After that happens, the master plan consultant will be selected, then prepare the plan. Design could begin by 2014, no earlier. Look for renderings in 2015 IMO.
  4. The state should be heavily financially reliable for this, right?
No, the State won't invest in a project that does not include transportation solutions. This would be a joint City/County project if economic development or park funds can be identified.

Just saw this exciting announcement and thought I'd open a new topic. Looks like Wells is partnering with cccp to bring 1st ward elementary it's own outdoor classroom themed park. it's being likened to the Green in size. While it will be for the school it will be open to the public during regular hours.

Organizers hope the park will be finished in time for the arrival of the Democratic National Convention in September, and speculate that it could serve as the site of some convention activities. The site is about five blocks from Time Warner Cable Arena, between North Brevard and North Caldwell streets.

Features will include a recreational green, performance stage, a bird and insect garden, and at least one commissioned sculpture.

It's really great to see wells continue to give back to the community post Wachovia. There is a rendering in the page itself but I could not post it from my iPad.

It makes me wonder if the First Ward Park across Brevard from 7th to 9th is really going to happen. Part of its use was going to be for students coming to Imaginon. Speaking of students, I wonder where the school buses will park if CMS students are brought into Uptown for the park.

  6. I was looking around the web, and I saw this architect website that I guess will be completing the master plan, and they have conceptual drawings for both the people mover, and the new terminal.

    People mover link: http://www.twgarchit...lio_aviation=10

    New Terminal link: http://www.twgarchit...lio_aviation=13

The part that confuses me the most is the two set of buildings behind the new hourly deck/rental car center. One of the buildings say "New Commuter Terminal", and the next says "New International Terminal". What will these be used for, check in/baggage claim?

Both buildings seem to be connected to Concourse E and Terminal 2(Concourse F?) by some sort of underground tunnel/train.

Please tell me I am wrong - it appears the people mover just connects parking decks to the international terminal. Is there no vision of connecting the airport to the City?
  7. The 5th Street sidewalk improvements are in the Center City Transportation Plan (2006) and Ivey's retail level owner Stefan LaTorre has been given an Infrastructure Reimbursement Grant of $175,000 to help pay for the improvements. He has developed plans to implement the wider sidewalk on the Ivey's side of 5th Street.

  8. I prefer Beech to Sugar, and my skiing friends from upstate NY agreed. It just seems more relaxed, faster lifts with shorter lines and fewer choke points with lots of novices just sitting on the slope. The ski village is quite a bit cooler than the single lodge at Sugar too. One is the highest elevation slope in NC and one is the longest run, but I forget which is which.

Those are both in Banner Elk, slightly farther drive from CLT but still only about 2 hours 20 min. The only skiing in Blowing Rock is App Ski Mtn, which I don't like very much. Extremely short and crowded. Their claim to fame is that they have the best terrain park and snow making abilities though.

Also, if you're renting equipment get it here in CLT before you go. It'll be the same price for the whole weekend as 1 session at the slope.

Agree on Beech Mountain, plus there is ice skating in the village. A few really good restaurants in BM and Banner Elk too.

  9. My wife and I don't go out to eat much, but we are this weekend for her birthday. If we go to Fiamma or Custom Shop or Georges Brasserie, do I need to wear a jacket and/or tie?

Also, thoughts on those restaurants, or other recommendations? No need to be fancy (actually, preferably not too), just good food. I trust the people on this forum more than my friends!

Definitely no jacket or tie at Fiamma or Custom Shop; I haven't been to Georges. Food and ambiance is good at Fiamma or Custom Shop. I think Fiamma is a bit more romantic; ask for a table on the mezzanine overlooking the bar.

  10. There are some new highway signs up on Brookshire that I noticed. The former exit sign for "Caldwell, Davidson, McDowell" is now called "Eleventh Street - subtext: Caldwell, Davidson McDowell" There are two of these I think.

Is this part of the "new" wayfinding signs program, because these are just the same old green highway signs...

    N

No; I understand these overhead signs are part of a reflectivity program to make general signs more visible at day or night. The wayfinding signs will be groud-mounted and direct motorists to venues in Uptown.

  11. I can't imagine there being political will to increase parking fees during a recession. City leaders might even consider reducing them, to entice more people to consider driving in from the suburbs. I remember seeing that tried during the 1990s recession in California by some valley towns.

City leaders don't control parking prices. 95% of Uptown parking is owned privately.

  12. Went to "Copper" last night. Finally Charlotte has a "fine dining" Indian place. Food was great (although it could have been spicier), service was incredible and the interiors are beautiful. All in all, a great experience. If you've never tried Indian food, this would be a great place to expand your horizons. Skip dessert, though. It's on East Blvd in Dilworth right in front of Paper Skyscraper.

Last week I tried the new Sonoma at BoA Corporate. The hottest, sexiest restaurant interior in town. Even the restrooms are cool. The upfit must have cost a small fortune (with the bank subsidizing, I assume). The food? Not bad, but the architecture is better.

Pio Pio is a great new Dilworth restaurant serving Colombian and Peruvian food at great prices in the Dilworth shopping center where Outback is (and Tally's used to be). This space previosuly housed a Spanish restuarant then a hot dog house. Pio Pio is by far the best thing that has happened here.

  13. That LandDesign rendering is definitely in that part of the empty lot at 4th and Kings. They were originally planning to restore Kings to its original alignment directly in front of Halton, but they kept it in its current alignment, and ditched the plans for all those roundabouts. That means, they'll put sculptures near each intersection. A different one would go near 7th as MC showed.

As for the building behind the Jack statue at 4th, it is likely going to be a student retail building as was included in older master plans to help support the greenway while still providing a use for the campus.

    http://www.charmeck.org/NR/rdonlyres/evcz2...wbrf/CPCC-b.gif

Note the age of the rendering. I believe it has changed several times in the last 5 years and may not resemble this plan now.

  14. So the deals for the Knights Stadium and Parks were OK'd tonight (as expected). Now we have some details of what Reese wanted. Apparently he offered to drop the lawsuits if the commissioners, among other things, gave him rights to 32 acres of land in 2nd Ward so he could build a 40,000 seat, retractable roof stadium that would be built to NCAA and MLB specifications. Where exactly does he have the money for something like this? So his idea is that we get an NCAA Men's Final Four and then let the building remain vacant until an MLB team decides they want to move here? That's just crazy. It would be like the Alamodome in San Antonio.

It hasn't been mentioned in a while, so I will do it here. The City has a Second Ward Neighborhood Master Plan, and it doesn't include baseball. It does have an urban school opportunity as one of its goals, as well as a distinct pedestrian oriented neighborrhood with a variety of housing options, improved neighborhood connectivity, integrated mixed use development and neighborhodd services. His "offer" is inconsistent with all the work in 2001 and 2002 leading to adoption of the Plan. There, I have saved the County a ridiculous amount of money.

  15. Elizabeth Ave is set to close on Monday, December 10 at 9am so that all of the improvements we have previously talked about on here can begin. The section from Kings Dr (CPCC) up to Hawthorne (Presbyterian Hospital) will be closed until October 1, 2008. It will really transform this section of Elizabeth, however I just hope that all of the local businesses along this street can survive the almost 1 year of construction and road closure.

Actually the closure is between Kings Drive and Charlottetown Avenue (formerly Independence) according to the City of Charlotte at their Street Closure Notices website http://www.charlottecentercity.org/images/...reet_notice.pdf

  16. I'm not trying to start an argument on weather people are born gay or not but I belive people choose to be gay. That said, one should suffer the consequences of ones desicion. Such as, If I choose to be gay then I need to live with the fact that people in America might discriminate against me and it was my desicion so I should have know the consequences before hand. If one choose to live in America, then one must embrace it and not try to mold it their own way. Most of you prob believe people are born gay, which in that case then people shouldn't descriminate since you can help it. So there really isn't a right or wrong since people have differeny ideas on the origins of homosexuality. People can't choose their race or sex so one shouldn't descriminate on those terms. But for religion and sexual origin one must live with the fact that you might be persecuted because of your choice. I'm a Christian and I always get put down and ridiculed by my teachers in our humanist school system but I know that being a Christian has its consequences. So until it is 100% proven that people are born gay they should be accountable for their actions in a Nation that is half against gays.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you are being put down because you are a Christian (though I don't see how that is true - God is love, remember?). I imagine you are being put down (a lot) because you are narrow-minded and discriminatory.

  17. Does anyone else agree with me when i say:

Charlotte REALLY NEEDS to rename its major thoroughfares that suffer from multiple street names>People navigating a large city shouldn"t have to learn nor cherish the quirks of yesterday>it makes NC look backwards>

Raleigh seems proactive as they renamed "capital blvd" which once was "north blvd" and changed "old wake forest road" to just "wake forest road" obviously this was to lesson confusion with the influx of new residents>

ALSO get rid of the politician"s dedications on the freeway signs> charlotte has different names for each direction of the same highway> looks small_town

i know the story behind the changing street names>>>each neighborhood didn"t want to lose its mailing identity but now it"s an issue for the greater good>

    Anyone else agree?

ps have a memorial service for the phrase "uptown" and switch to "downtown"

Uptown is part of Charlotte's heritage dating back to the 1750's when the Indian paths crossed on a hilltop, eventually grew into a hamlet with a courthouse and general stores. Uptown was and still is located on a ridge. The streetcar neighborhoods built to serve Charlotte's central business district traveled "up" town to get there. More recently on September 23, 1974 as recorded by the Charlotte Observer, Mayor John Belk signed a proclamation designating the central business district as "Uptown". If you still doubt the validity of the phrase, take a walk toward Trade and Tryon. From many part of Uptown, you must walk up hill to get there.
