  1. Here's an excerpt from Thomas Monigan's blog at the gazette on the new center. FWIW, the rezoning was approved so the center has the green light from everything I understand:

SOMETIMES THE WHOLE DAY CHANGES WHEN THE PHONE RINGS. Some days are netter than others in this regard. Thanks to my Mystery Caller (You know who you are) who supplied the tip on The Shoppes at Gastonia. This will be on McLean Family land close to Ashbrook HS and the intersection of South New Hope and Redbud. Plans call for 128,500 square feet of retail space on 17.3 acres. Plans for The Shoppes at Gastonia will be presented at the June 7 meeting of the Gastonia Planning Commission. If approved, completion would be targeted for late 2009. Stanberry Development, based in Columbus, Ohio, would be leasing the land from Les McLean, who grew up in a house on that site. Greg Hall, Stanbery

  2. The development on New Hope as described by the Gazette has franklin square like qualities. I cant remember the size but it has alot of more "upscale" tenants that arent currently located in Gastonia. Jos A. Bank, Coldwater Creek, Ann Taylor Loft, etc. are the kinds of stores that were included in the drawing plus other outparcels.

  3. If that happens, that will suck for franklin square to lose BestBuy and have a big vacant spot.

MaryJo's is so popular, not only in the southeast but even somewhat known across the country. i would hope they could find a way to stay at the location or find a new location nearby just to keep it familiar with those who shop there.

Yes, that is true. They've always had good luck filling the big spots in that center though. It's had an above average rate of turnover with stores there since it opened. Toys R Us has been looking to get in that area for probably 6-7 years and Babies R Us isnt in the market yet either.

One thing that the demolishing will do is revive Akers Center, Gastonia's first strip center. Alot of Gaston Mall's stores are going to be heading over there, led by Jackson's Cafeteria.

  4. I guess longhorn is moving because of the closing of Gaston Mall.

I have heard SuperTarget is coming to the Gaston Mall location.

Anyone else heard anything about that?

When I worked at Best Buy in Gastonia, our managers told us they are tearing down Gaston Mall and replacing it with a power center consisting of Super Target, Best Buy, Dick's and another store I forgot. I presume any new deal would include Mary Jo's also.

  5. They've began grading for the Lowe's in Belmont. A BB&T is also confirmed for the Montcross development.

I worry about Belmont's downtown renaissance with all of this big box development showing up.

  6. Heard today that the new Ghazi development should have Moe's Southwest Grill and that Longhorn is moving from its current location over by Gaston Mall.

There will be at least one other restaurant and other shops, but my source didn't have much more information than that.

I'd be shocked if it wasnt a carrabba's, they've been in the rumor mill for what seems like 3-4 years.

  7. The small building going up next to Steak N' Shake by Cox Rd. is a Cookout.

    News from Belmont:

Construction has begun on the Hampton Inn near the new Wal-Mart which is part of the Montcross area. Furture business reported to come are Lowes, Cracker Barrell and Longhorn Steakhouse.

    Poor Belmont :(.

I hope it doesnt go the way of most of the small towns in southern meck/western union counties.

  8. Just FYI..

#1. Financing is all but in place for the Loray Mill renovation project. If this thing actually does get some legs, it could revitilize the entire western side of Gastonia.

#2. Gaston Mall is an unmitigated dump. The mens toilets in the mall are barely function, as one of the bathrooms has no doors on the stalls while all of them are constantly overflowing. There is nothing worth saving in that mall, save HT and Mary Jo's. The cafeteria is one of the most dreadful restaurants in the entire Charlotte region. Needless to say, I cant wait to dance on it's grave once it's demolished.

  9. http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/liv...el/13007202.htm

it looks like usairways' cost-structure improvements and merger with america west is already helping the fare situation in charlotte. it was the 7th largest decline in fares. hopefully that will mean more people fly out of charlotte instead of doing that weird thing where they drive to greensboro just to fly back to charlotte to connect just to get a fare that is reasonable.

I would think most of that would be attributed to AirTran and not USAirways so far.

  10. You gotta be kidding? right? I think it should be located "somewhere" in the south but Charlotte is on my if list. I can truly rule out Daytona and Richmond, but I don't think Charlotte will get it. The most likely city is Kansas City, then Atlanta, and then Charlotte. I would've thought all along that CLT would be a front-runner but I guess I was wrong. Bill France....How could you? I am very dissapointed in you!

It isnt bill doing it, it's his idiotic son trying to reinvent the wheel.

  11. I think the coverage focused on young black kids has been ridiculous lately. Supposedly, everyone that wears a white t-shirt and hangs out in uptown is a gang member. As a matter of fact, I am sick of the non stop gang talk on that station. It seems like they have changed the philosophy of their reporting to try to keep up with channel 9 which makes me sick because WBTV used to be a refuge from the crap channel 9 calls news.

    Rant over.

  12. The stores in Birkdale Village probaby serve a different clientale and there are several thousand residences withing walking distance of the place.  I think Banana Republic and the others will remain open.  It is a testimate of the large number of people who are pouring into the Lake area.  There was an article in the paper this past week that suggested there were already 90,000 people in the county north of the Huntersville city limits.

On a side note, I was over at BV  today walking through the Greens @ Birkdale and had the feeling I was on the Truman Show.  Kinda creepy for everything to look so neat and perfect.

have you ever been to troy, michigan? The whole freakin' town is like that lol.

  13. Most likely AirTran. They will be taking over the old ATA gate....this will be the 3rd time this airline has served Charlotte....it was previously known as Valu-Jet. It will not be SWA as they require more gates than CLT currently has available.

Now, this could also be the official announcement that Mexicana will be serving Charlotte starting this summer.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Air Tran isnt SWA but it's better than nothing I guess. I hadnt thought of Mexicana but that is certainly a possibility.
