  1. So This building has been pretty much the same for the past 5 years. When I took this photo the other day, there was a guy working on something in there. the inside has some tools but is pretty cluttered. It seems like there would be some serious potential for such a big building in a prime location (especially with the easy access for delivery trucks)

So what's the deal with this building?

  2. In the end, I want the businesses to appeal to both the people who live in the neighborhood who are there out of necessity and those who are there by choice. I want businesses that appeal to all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds and are comfortable places to frequent for people from many different walks of life. I think Sandmanns did a good job of bridging some of those gaps and I hope more businesses in the future can do the same (without the tax issues)

  3. I would encourage you all to check out the salon page on facebook that is referred to in these recent posts and see that the owner of the store is actively participating in discussion about the recent plans. It is great to have people so passionate about our community and I am glad that they are involving the Baxter Neighborhood Association. I believe that many of the low-income residents of the neighborhood are greatly underrepresented in the online conversations about Wealthy street, so it is good to get them involved in other ways.

  4. When I see someone post things like this, it makes me sad:

that dished out junk food and bottom-shelf booze and served as a loitering point for the local wannabe street thugs.

Characterizing people as "wannabe street thugs" is troubling. Would you say the same thing if those people "loitering" had handlebar mustaches, plaid shirts, and rode around on fixies?

All one has to do is look at the other liquor store disguised as "markets" to know what WILL be coming if these guys get one

that is a big assumption, especially since the market's new owners have made a deliberate effort to include more produce, craft beer, etc.

With a still rough Ghetto neighborhood to the south

It so so much more constructive to talk about the concentration of households in poverty, racial/ethnic makeup of a community, etc instead of just calling it a "ghetto"

All of the breweries in the area have a spotless reputation of being places that attract people for casual drinking and dining,

They have a reputation of being places that attract white, upper-middle class white people...

I live VERY close to the Miti Mini and I often think to myself why I have never gone in there. It is convenient, sells beer and liquor (I assume) but for some reason if I needed to get a bottle of Vodka for a party, I would probably end up driving to CVS in EGR or Eastown. Why is that? I think it is because I don't feel comfortable there. It's not the setting or clientele that I grew up with. But every time I go to Martha's Vineyard, I have to stop myself and think, why have I RARELY seen minorities in that place? Could it be the same reason I don't go to the Miti Mini? Maybe they don't feel comfortable shopping there because it is not what THEY grew up with. Who am I to say what kind of booze is good for a community? Why is it ok for me to stumble home after a night at Brewery Vivant but not someone who has drank "vodka in brown paper bag"? Why is it ok to have a business that sells whiskey and Gruyere cheese but not a business that sells whiskey and cheetos? If these are the differences that we are fighting against, we need to look a little closer at our REAL reasons and talk about the problems of different groups of people with different needs and different tastes living in the same community.

  5. I bet this property won't be on the market for very long. Taking the house and the parking lot across seems like an ideal redevelopment situation.

    Joe

A little birdie in the Neighborhood told me that David LaGrand Bought the property, but no word yet on what the plans for it are.

  6. I think that was scrapped from the design.

There is a nice section of what I assume is the pedestrian bridge sitting there in an alley, and they were building what appeared to be supports for it when I drove by during lunch today.

No Spire!? that makes me sad, that was the thing I was most excited about on that building!

  7. A transcontinental racing event known as the "Fireball Run" is scheduled to end in Grand Rapids the first weekend of October. I decided to mention it in this thread because it could, potentially, generate some additional media exposure for Grand Rapids. Here are a couple of links and a video:

as cool as it is to see Mayor Heartwell in a promotional video.. I have to say that his on-screen presence is a little weak... oh well

  8. I don't mind the furniture store being there at all, but I would like to see it cleaned up some. The building is crooked, and unless some work is done it isn't going to be there long. Diversity is a strong point of Wealthy St. I have heard of some positive movement from the owners of the Wealthy Market, they are at least talking to other people about their building and parking lot now.

I agree about keeping the furniture store, I think you are spot on with it jsut needing to be cleaned up a little bit. I feel like that is the case for a lot of things along wealthy...

it is amazing what a clean facade and nice sign can do for a place

  9. any plans for that furniture shop to be made into something more than a pile of furniture that makes it's way to the sidewalk when it is warm?

or maybe making the wealthy market more than a glorified liquor store with a GIANT parking lot?

I love that this intersection is turning into something great!

  10. unfortunately they're calling it quits - at least temporarily - in the retail setting. she is selling her things online and at occasional shows around town/allegan, etc.

yeah that pretty much sucks.. that place had some really cool stuff. I mean I understand how online can be good business, but as long as the place is still there, why not do both street and online business? bring the laptop into the store.. guess it is probably a rent issue... I just wish more business would stick around

  11. The map is a little wrong. Wealthy from Union east to Prospect won't be closed (until next year if I heard right) so Paris, College, Morris and Prospect won't be as affected. I would have to guess you live in the red brick apartment building on the nortwest corner, College and Wealthy. Or the building with big columns on the southeast corner (could have bought that builing for $17,000 in 1977).

oh goody, as long as I can still get around my building , I am happy...

and yes you are correct about the red brick building :)

according to wwmt it says union to prospect happens in may:

  12. Street construction starts Monday for Cherry & Wealthy Street:

    447362091_721ec98353.jpg

why does this map omit paris, college, moris, and prospect? I live on Wealthy street, Where am I supposed to park? Will the one-ways like college be available for parking?

    What I like:

    new street

    What I don't like:

    being woke up by back-hoe's

    having no place to park

lots of dust in my windows from the construction...

can you guess what building I live in?

  13. In my opinion a decent place to eat dinner would do well. You would draw from downtown, EGR and the surrounding areas. I think the place on Cherry should also do very well providing they get their name out there properly (read: hire the right PR/marketing person).

When I was in the UK this summer, we ate at a tapas restaurant but it wasnt expensive. I think that would be great. I know people like San Chez but only if they want to sell their firstborn for a meal. I love the idea of Tapas, but would love it even more if it were affordable.

  14. So here are my questions:

    1. will places such as "Wild Bunch" ever get a makeover?

    2. what kinds of businesses would work on welathy street?

    a grocery store?

    more restaurants?

things such as a kinkos, or tux shop?

what belongs and what will survive?

  15. I went to the library downtown to do some Wealthy Street research, there are some photos of buildings but it is quite an ordeal to see the photos. (you have to fill out a form for a specific negative of a specific address and then if you want the image you have to pay like 13 bucks) and I am surprised that there aren't more historical photos of wealthy street... not as popular in the day I guess...

anyway, I do plan to go back with specific addresses in mind to research. I will learn more about wealthy street!

  16. I have heard from reliable sources that "bad things" go on in that building and that the police are always on their asses. That building would look a lot like Wealthy Street Bakery / Art of the Table if it were renovated properly.

"bad things" as in like prostitution? drugs? porn? dog sacrifices?
