I vaguely remember the homestead behind the Oak City Dinner. What did the dinner used to be called?
Thought of the answer to my own question. It was the Ham and Egger.
-
There was an old homestead at the site behind the old Oak City Diner. It was probably there until the mid to late 80's. Wake Forest Road was full of old estates when I grew up in the 70's. Anyone remember Scream in the Dark ghost house at the corner of Millbrook and Falls of the Neuse? There was a sign at the corner of Six Forks and Shelly Road back in the early 70's that read Raleigh 12 miles. I could go on and on. I enjoy this site.

I remember one estate on Old Wake Forest R. where the North Raleigh Hilton is now. My friends and I used to follow Big Branch down from Eastgate subdivision to a little path that led up to the back of it. They still had a big hog and a mule that we would try to ride.
I definitely remember Scream in the Dark!

OK when I read KFC is fried chicken I spewed coffee all over my keyboard.
But the three letter explanations are greatly appreciated. I'll try to keep up.

CBC corporate offices moved to the Western Blvd complex a few years ago, only 101.5 remains in the 701 building.

The full page ad is nothing new, just a large version of this.

RDU-London Gatwick is indeed a daily flight. I would love to have a direct flight to Frankfurt. It

I recently overheard something regarding JetBlue and service to RDU. IS that true?
I believe Jetblue already flies to New York and Boston out of RDU, or did you mean additional destinations?
-
Although compared to other airports RDU may not be much to look at, compared to 25 years ago it has improved light-years. Back then it was a little dump beside a state maintained two-lane road. Access has been improved greatly. I also think they have done a great job landscaping the entry and exits. Parking has been expanded.
In a sense it has been a victim of the regions success. The current terminal A was meant to be a temporary facility that would be replaced after a few years, but the airport couldn

Well now I'm confused. I thought Marc Scruggs was affiliated with Briggs Hardware located at the corner of Six Forks and Atlantic. Is this in addition to or totally separate from the Ridgewood SC hardware store?

To answer the mystery to why there is a Terminal C and Terminal A. When the airport was designed there were plans to have 3 terminals. Terminal A and C on opposite sides(the current configuration) and terminal B would be where the current control tower sits. Its runways would've overlapped perpendicularly to the current runways or just merge with the other two. This was scratched from the original plans and was to be used for future development.
It would be something for the airport to eventually need a 3rd terminal, but I don't think it would ever happen.

In what was once the city's train station, 518 West Italian Cafe, 518 West Jones Street,
Once the city's train station?
I've never heard that one. Is it true?

A little googling indicates the Heron mine (I'm assuming this is the one on Leadmine Rd.) produced 20,000 lbs. of graphite in 1887.
-
Mine Shaft intersects with Leadmine Road directly across from the entrance to The Montessori School of Raleigh. A creek runs just to the south of the campus, on the other side is a hill where the remains of at least one mineshaft is still discernable. I

The best I can do is picture of the backside facing Wilmington Street. You can see the sign on the white building. I think the striped building was part of Belk

Here are a group of photos I scanned showing Raleigh around 1991 when several project were being built. I apologize in advance for the graininess of the pics.
Here is a photo taken from the parking deck next to the bus transfer facility showing the cranes getting ready to start construction on the First Union building.
Same parking deck, camera rotated to the left to show the Raleigh Federal building and the Wachovia building.
Same deck, camera rotated further left showing the former First Citizens building (RIP) razed to make way for a possible tower. Also note the BB&T logo on the 333 corporate building and the under construction Wake County Saftey Center (jail).
Several months later, looking North up Salisbury Street from the deck across from the Sheraton, showing the nearing completion First Union building.
A little closer look.
Turning your attention to the south where another tower was going up.
View from the municipal parking deck to the north of city hall showing York Hannover 2 (BB&T) building rising in the background.
This is the backside of the Montague building. Built in 1903 I believe, this building was built in response to suggestions that the State Capitol be relocated to Greensboro because Raleigh was to bucolic. Thats the Federal building in the background.
Looking East on Hargett Street. That's the Montague building on the left.
Hargett Street looking West. Notice the city is transitioning from traffic lights on wires to traffic lights on poles.
The old Briggs hardware building. There was still a hardware store in the bottom then.
I like this photo. It gives Raleigh a dense look.
Raleigh's Capitol Club Building.
Overlooking the warehouse distric, that's the John Yancey in the background.
Same view, zoomed out.
Looking northwest from the municipal parking deck. The Morgan on Dawson condos occupy the parking lot to the left now.
Looking North on S Wilmington Street towards the back of the city market area. Progress Energy owns the land to the left, hopefully we'll see something go up there soon.
Looking North on Salisbury Street past the almost completed Wake County Safety Center. There used to be a theatre in the bottom of the 8 story building named either the State or the Ambassador (someone help me out here) My Dad used to work in this building as a CP&L employee in the 70

Originally the Sear's that is offset from the central axis of the mall anchored the end of the mall, but not where the Hecht's is. Hecht's was built beyond the original Sear's and the Sear's space was divided into shops, in effect lengthening the mall with a new Sear's being built to the side.

Man, what memories. I grew up in Eastgate subdivision and rode my bike to the mall many times through the '70 s. I'm glad to see the site active again.
About the proposed motel I think they lopped off one story (from 8 to 7 I think) and said they would break ground this summer!

Does anyone know where Sanders Motor Company was located prior to the building Artspace is in now?
This would have been right after relocating from Smithfield.
