  1. Speaking of Mexican....

This was in the classified of the SHJ today:

    NOTICE OF APPLICATION

Notice is hereby given that CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL OF COLORADO, LLC intends to apply to the South Carolina Department of Revenue for a license/permit that will allow the sale and ON premises consumption of beer, wine and liquor at 1490 W O EZELL BLVD, SUITE A, Spartanburg, SC 29301. To object to the issuance of this permit/license, written protest must be received by the SC Department of Revenue no later than the 10th of June, 2011.

Here are the details from the SHJ today: http://www.goupstate.com/article/20110608/ARTICLES/110609719/0/FRONTPAGE

  2. I noticed that Namaste on E. Main looked empty the other afternoon when I drove by. Please tell me it hasn't closed! Spartanburg needs at least one good Indian restaurant, and I was always please with their product (before and after the name change).

It has reopened as Shaan Restaurant, apparently with the same owners as Handi Indian Restaurant in Greenville. The food was good - about the same as before.

  3. JoAnn Fabrics is a good store. Glad to see Spartanburg land it.

Old Navy is moving or already has moved to the shopping center (Westgate Village) that houses the new Longhorn Steakhouse.

When I was over there yesterday, I saw an empty Old Navy at the old site and renovations at the new site that looked nowhere near ready to house a store. I was surprised that Old Navy would go any length of time without being open at one of the two locations.

  4. I noticed that Namaste on E. Main looked empty the other afternoon when I drove by. Please tell me it hasn't closed! Spartanburg needs at least one good Indian restaurant, and I was always please with their product (before and after the name change).

  5. Surprised as well. That entire complex needs to be bull-dozed and rebuilt from the ground up.

I was hopeful that would happen with only Office Max/Depot and the Dollar Tree still there. Perhaps Longhorn can bring an anchor in, but I'm not betting on it.

I'd still love to see a Whole Foods/Trader Joes/Earthfare/Fresh Market where CC was.

An employee at Toys R Us told my wife that a Babies R Us would fill one of the spots in that shopping center. Currently, Haywood Rd in Greenville is the closest Babies R Us.

  6. Five Spices recently changed ownership and reopened as Namaste. The buffet price actually dropped to $6.99, and it seemed to be as good as, if not better than, Five Spices. There have been a few cosmetic changes on the inside, but it remains relatively the same as before.

The Herald Journal had a feature on it today: http://www.goupstate.com/article/20100513/ARTICLES/5131000/1101?Title=East-side-eatery-Namaste-translates-to-good-food

  7. I recently tried Sahara, the new Mediterranean restaurant across from Ingles on 29. It was really tasty with a good variety on the lunch buffet.

I'm glad Spartanburg has a good Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurant now...I'll be back.

  8. There's a new Indian restaurant that's opened on 221 across from the Hospital, next to Coggin's Floral Shop. It's called Pachranga Authentic Indian Cuisine. It's a buffet/menu style restaurant and is not bad. I'm so glad to have a buffet-style Indian Restaurant. The food is a little hotter (spicy) than I'm used to but that's just fine with me. I've only been once, but they had naan, onion chutney, mint chutney, bhaji, chicken saag, chicken korma, curried veggies, salad, etc... when we went. They've been open for a couple of weeks but didn't seem busy when my wife and I went. I hope they stay in business. I LOVE 5 Spice, but I like having buffet as an option too. To be honest, I can't give it more than a 7 out of 10, but to be fair I went at 3pm, which is not the best time to go to a buffet.

I noticed this when I was driving around earlier today. I'll have to check it out soon.

Five Spices switched their lunch format to a buffet a few months ago. It was a quasi-buffet before that where you could eat all you wanted but they would serve it to you.

  9. Wow, that is shocking. It is also somewhat amazing to note how many well-known celebrities have died in less than a week.

In other breaking news, the U.S. men's soccer team is winning the Confederations Cup final against Brazil, 2-1 with less than one half left to play in regulation. (The game is currently airing live on ESPN.) This comes after an extremely improbable but necessary 3-0 victory over Egypt (with Brazil simultaneously knocking off Italy 3-0, which was also needed for the U.S. to advance) and a 2-0 shocker to defeat the #1 team in the World, Spain. This is a huge development for the many soccer fans in the U.S., including right here in the Upstate. We have lots of great youth and high school soccer teams in the region, including a very large soccer academy, CESA.

Tough loss for the U.S., but note that three of the team's starters yesterday played college soccer in the Upstate: two from Furman (Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark) and one from Clemson (Onyewu). That's quite a validation of the level of play at our area schools.

  10. The Greenville Drive and Fluor Field will host the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament next Wednesday through Sunday. There should be a lot of good action here - the SoCon is rated 7th out of 31 Division I conferences in the nation and could get three teams in the NCAA Tournament this year. Furman, The Citadel and College of Charleston are instate teams who should be playing.

  11. I heard some news today that might affect Greenville. Fenway Park was supposed to host the ACC Baseball Tournament in 2009, but due to a scheduling error at Fenway it was moved to 2010. So now the ACC is looking for a ballpark for the 2009 tournament. I don't know if Fluor Field at the West End is large enough to accommodate the crowds they are expecting, but wouldn't it be great to see Greenville make a run at this? I believe the ACC Baseball Tournament used to be held in Greenville at Municipal Stadium. I know Greenville would be a fantastic host city. Thoughts?

Flour Field is hosting the Southern Conference baseball tournament in 2009, and I imagine that would preclude them from hosting the ACC tournament because the schedules would overlap.

  12. To return to my earlier question about Poinsett Homes...I heard again this week that they were preparing to close up shop, and had let everyone but a few office staff go. Anyone else heard anything on them? A real shame if its true...

Wow, that's a surprise, even considering the current housing market. They have a neighborhood in Boiling Springs off of Parris Bridge road that is huge but only has about 5 or 6 houses/townhomes completed. I would hate to be a homeowner in there who can't expect anything to be built next door.

  13. That would be a good location in relation to downtown, but I don't think there is enough room on the County Square site for a public four-year university. Greenville Tech's campus seems much larger, with room to expand.

As alluded to above, Furman moved from this exact location in the 1950s for the very same reason: lack of space to expand and grow. An area west of downtown may be best suited for a large entity such as a university.

  14. I don't think there is any real money to have much in the way of maintenance, or capital improvements at the Bi Lo Center. The facility basically is one step ahead of its debt payments, has been for years. I don't think there has been any real improvements or such in that facility since before the NCAA basketball tournament, and that was six years ago now.

It was always a near run thing on getting a constant stream of revenue to not only pay the debt, but continue to make improvements and have quality entertainment. The facility seems like it is in maintenance mode mostly. Anyone familiar with the decades of the coliseum debate in Greenville probably isn't surprised that the facility struggles. There isn't any real money for it, nor is there much community desire for it.

When it was opened in '98, there was a nice, top level appreciation for it, especially in the number of luxury suites used, the early crowds for hockey, etc., but the curve of crowd total crowd size and luxury rentals has grown smaller and smaller over time. Special events have just died there. The Southern Conference basketball tournament didn't draw flies, and the even fled to North Charleston, probably never to come back for example. Add in competition with the Colonial Center, the Gwinett Arena, the arenas in Charlotte, along with all the other issues and there you have a ten year old facility that is aging fast, and unless some things change - for this goes far, far beyond what management does or doesn't do (and with Centerpoint having less of a role since the Grrowl folding) the Bi Lo Center will just be a larger version of the Memorial Auditorium after a while.

Just a slight correction: the first year the Southern Conference Tournament was here it drew the most fans in the history of the event. From what I hear, Sheer and his group just had a bad business plan and didn't make any money off of it. That's why it never returned.
